Asmanyofusalreadyknow,havingplansinplaceforthefutureisnoguaranteethattheywillbecomereality.Inthisrespect,somepeoplearemorefortunatethanothers,ascanbeillustratedbycomparingthelivesoftwofamousauthors,born40yearsapart.Althoughtheysharedthesameambitiousandenergeticapproachtolife,theircareersunfoldedincontrastingways.

TheAmericanauthor,ErnestHemingway,bornin1899,wasfromearlyboyhoodsingle-mindedinhisambitiontowrite.Onleavinghighschool,hejoinedalocalKansasnewspaperasatraineereporter.HewentontobecomeforeigncorrespondentfortheTorontoStarandusedhisextraordinaryexperiencesinEuropeandlaterCubatoinformhiswritingInhiswords,"

IdecidedthatIwouldwriteonestoryabouteachthingthatIknewabout."

Havingsethimselfthisgoal,hewrotenovelsandshortstoriesbasedonhispersonalexperiencesoftheFirstWorldWar,theSpanishCivilWar,bullfightinganddeep-seafishing,amongstothers.HisshortnovelTheOldManandtheSea,aboutthethree-dayepicstrugglebetweenanelderlyfishermanandthebiggestfishhehadevercaught,wonthePulitzerPrizeforFictionin1953.HewouldlatergoontowintheNobelPrizeinLiterature.

Bycontrast,theyoungAuthurConanDoyle,borninScotlandin1859,hadoriginallyworkedasdoctor.ButDoyle'

mainambitionwastobecomeawriterofhistoricalnovels.Althoughsomeofhishistoricalnovelswerepublished,theirsuccesswasnothingcomparedtothestoriesofhisfictionaldetective,SherlockHolmes,whichheisstillbestknownfortothisday.

Interestingly,DoylewrotesomeofhisearlyHolmesstorieswhilehewaswaitingforpatientsinhismedicalpracticeinLondon.AfterSherlockHolmesmadehimahouseholdname,Doylegaveupmedicineanddevotedhimselfentirelytowriting.Hestilllongedtobecomeknownforhishistoricalnovelsamongstotheracademicworks.Thepublic,however,couldn'

tgetenoughofSherlockHolmes.Indesperation,Doylekilledoffthefamousdetectiveinanovelpublishedin1893sothathecouldfocusonhis"

writing.However,fansofHolmesweresoangrythatDoyle,underimmensepressure,wasforcedtobringHolmesbackfromthedead.Doyle'
