Fruitandvegetablesarerichincarotenoids(类胡萝卜素),whichareknowntoprotectagainstcelldamagefrompollutionandUVrays,andcanalsopreventage-relateddiseasesincludingheartdiseaseandcancer.Butwhileitwasknowneatingextremeamountsofcertainvegetablessuchascarrotscouldturnskinorange,itwasnotknownasmallincreasewasperceptible(被觉察)toothers—andwasseenasappealing.
Acamerameasuredchangestotheskin'
sredness,yellownessandlightness,andfounditsignificantlychangedinpeoplewhonaturallyincreasedtheirintake.Thesechangeswerenotevidentinthreeweeks.Usinglightsensors,theresearchersshowedtheseredandyellowhueswerelinkedwiththelevelsofcarotenoidsintheirskin.Therearehundredsofcarotenoidsbutthosethoughttohavethemostdramaticeffectarelycopene(番茄红素)—whichgivestomatoesandredpepperstheirredcolour—andbeta-carotenefoundincarrotsaswellasbroccoli,squash,andspinach.Skincolourisalsoaffectedbychemicalscalledpolyphenols(多元酚),foundinapples,blueberriesandcherries,whichcausebloodrushtotheskinsurface.

Itisaparticularprobleminrichercountrieswithsleepexpertslinkingittotheuseofmobilephonesandcomputersinbedroomlateatnight.Sleepdeprivationissuchaseriousproblemthatlessonshavetobedraggeddowntoalowerleveltosuitsleep-deprivedlearners,thestudyfound.Theinternationalcomparison,carriedoutbyBostonCollege,foundtheUnitedStatestohavethehighestnumberofsleep-deprivedstudents,with73%of9-and10-year-oldsand80%of13-and14-year-oldsidentifiedbytheirteachersasbeingnegativelyaffected.
Inliteracy(读写能力)teststherewere76%of9-and10-year-oldslackingsleep.Thiswasmuchhigherthantheinternationalaverageof47%ofprimarypupilsneedingmoresleepand57%amongthesecondaryagegroup.
Othercountrieswiththemostsleep-deprivedyoungsterswereNewZealand,SaudiArabia,Australia,England,IrelandandFrance.High-performingFinlandisalsoamongthemostlackinginsleep.CountrieswiththebestrecordsforgettingenoughsleepincludeAzerbaijan,Kazakhstan,Portugal,theCzechRepublic,JapanandMalta.
