Crossingyourlegsisanextremelycommonhabit;
mostpeopledon’tevennoticethatthey’redoingitwhentheysitdown.Whileyoumayfinditcomfortabletositwithonekneecrossedovertheother,itmightbecausinghealthproblemsthatyouarenotawareof.
AstudypublishedinBloodPressureMonitoringstatedthatsittingwithyourlegscrossedcanincreaseyourbloodpressure.Thereasonthishappensisbecausethebloodinyourlegshastoworkagainstgravitytobepumpedbacktoyourheart,crossingonelegovertheotherincreasesresistance,makingitevenharderforthebloodtocirculate.Thiscausesyourbodytoincreaseyourbloodpressuretopushthebloodbacktotheheart.Youwon’tfeelanyimmediateeffects,butifyousitforlongperiodsoftimeit’simportantthatyoutakenoteofhowlongyouhaveyourlegscrossedfor.Youshouldn’thaveyourlegscrossedformorethan15minutes,andit’simportantthatyougetupandwalkaroundatleastonceeveryhour.
Crossingyourlegscanalsoleadtoneckandbackpain.Ideally,it’sbestforourbodiestositwithourfeetplantedflat,hipwidthapart,onthefloor,butit’snoteasytomaintainperfectposturealldayattheoffice.Whenyousitwithyourlegscrossedyourhipsareinatwistedposition,whichcancauseoneofyourpelvicbonestorotate.Sinceyourpelvicbonesupportsyourneckandspine,thiscancausepressureonyourlowerandmiddlebackandneck.
Youalsomightnoticethatwhenyousitwithyourlegscrossedforlongperiodsoftimeyourfeetandlegsgettinglyorhavethefeelingofbeingasleep.Thisisbecausewhenonelegsitsontopoftheotheritcausespressureontheveinsandnervesinyourlegsandfeet.Itcancausenumbnessortemporaryparalysisinthelegs,ankles,orfeet.Whilethefeelingofdiscomfortmayonlylastaminuteortwo,repeatedlycrossingyourlegsuntiltheyfeelnumbcancausepermanentnervedamage.
