EnglishliteraturebeganwiththeAnglo-SaxonsettlementinEngland.ThestudyofEnglishliteratureusuallybeginswiththeAnglo-SaxonepicpoemBeowulf.TheAnglo-SaxonsfirstbroughttoEnglandtheGermaniclanguageandculture.AftertheNormanConquestin1066,theNormansboughttoEnglandafreshwaveofMediterraneancivilization,whichincludesGreekculture,Romanlaw,andtheChristianreligion.ItistheculturalinfluencesofthesetwoconqueststhatprovidethesourcefortheriseandgrowthofEnglishliterature.TheEnglishatthattimewascalledOldEnglish,whichisquitehardtorecognizetoday.
