Abstract:
Astheneedofautomationincreasessignificantly,acontrolsystemneedstobeeasilyprogrammable,flexible,reliable,robustandcosteffective.Inthispaperareviewontheapplicationofprogrammablelogiccontroller(PLC)inourcurrentmarketisdiscussed.InvestigationsontheapplicationsofPLCsinenergyresearch,engineeringstudies,industrialcontrolapplicationsandmonitoringofplantsarereviewedinthispaper.PLCsdohaveitsownlimitations,butfindingsindicatethatPLCshavemoreadvantagesthanlimitations.ThispaperconcludesthatPLCscanbeusedforanyapplicationswhetheritisofsimpleorcomplicatedcontrolsystem.

1.Introduction
Programmablelogiccontrollers[PLC]arecomputer-based,solid-state,singleprocessordevicesthatemulatethebehaviorofanelectricladderdiagram[1]capableofcontrollingmanytypesofindustrialequipmentandentireautomatedsystems[2].PLCsareusuallyamainpartofautomaticsystemsinindustry[3].Theyareveryefficientandreliableinapplicationsinvolvingsequentialcontrolandthesynchronizationofprocessesandauxiliaryelementsinthemanufacturing,chemicalandprocessindustries[4,5].BesideshavingtechnologicaladvantagesofusingPLC,italsodecreasesthepricesintheadvancedlevelandcomplexcontrolsystem[5–7].Nowadays,mostofthecontrolelementsusedtoexecutethelogicofthesystemwassubstitutedbythePLCs[8].Thetermlogicisusedbecausetheprogrammingisprimarilyconcernedwithimplementinglogicandswitchingoperations.Inputdevicessuchasswitches,andoutputdevicessuchasmotors,beingcontrolledareconnectedtothePLCandthenthecontrollermonitorstheinputsandoutputsaccordingtothemachineorprocess[9].OriginallyPLCsweredesignedasareplacementforhard-wiredrelayandtimerlogiccontrolsystems.(Hard-wiringmeansthatallofthecomponentsweremanuallyconnectedbywires).PLCconsistsoftwopartsi.e.thePLChardwareandprogramming.DetailsonthehardwareandprogrammingwillbediscussedintheSections3and4,respectively.
PLCswerefirstusedbytheautomotiveindustryinthelate1960s[2,10–13],itsautomatedequipmentwasprimarilycontrolledbydiscreteinflexiblecircuitsconsistingofelectro-mechanicalrelaysandcoilshardwiredonpanels.GeneralMotorsdevelopedthespecificationsforaprogrammablecontrollerthatcouldreplacethehard-wiredrelaycircuits[2,11,12].Themostradicalidea,wastheimplementationofaprogramminglanguagebasedonarelayschematicdiagram,withinputs(fromlimitswitches,pushbuttons,etc.)representedbyrelaycontact,andoutputs(tosolenoids,motorstarters,lamps,etc.)representedbyrelaycoils[12].Fig.1(a)showsasimplehydrauliccylinderwhichcanbeextendedorretractedbypushbuttons.Itsstrokeissetbylimitswitcheswhichopenattheendoftravel,andthesolenoidscanonlybeoperatedifthehydraulicpumpisrunning.ThiswouldbecontrolledbythecomputerprogramofFig.1(b)whichisidenticaltotherelaycircuitneededtocontrolthecylinder.Theseprogramslookliketherungsonaladder,andwereconsequentlycalled‘LadderDiagrams.’
Inthemid-1960s,Hydramatic,adivisionofGeneralMotorsCorporation,envisionedthatacomputercouldbeusedtoperformthelogicfunctionsthenperformedbyrelays[2].Theengineeringteamwrotealistoffeaturesoftheproposedcomputingdevice.GMinitiatedthedevelopmentofthecomputingdevicebyspeci-fyingcertaindesigncriteria,including:
