WhatIsRealBeauty?

本篇是96年湖南省第二届非英语专业大学生英语演讲比赛团体二等奖获奖者之

一的演讲辞。

其中引用正、反两方面的事例来论述“真正的美不在外表，而在

内心”这一观点的方法值得学习与借鉴。

Itishumannaturethatallofusshouldbefondofbeauty.

Everybodywasbornwithaheartforbeauty.

TodayinChina,withtherisingofourlivingstandard,people's

requirementofbeautyhasbeenheIghtenedaccordingly.Somepeople

sparenomoneyorenergyonbeautifulclothes,fashionablehair

styles,thedecorationoftheirhousesandeventheimprovementof

theirlooks.Butitseemstome,all

thesearemoreorlessconfinedtothebeautyinappearance,or

rather,theoutwardbeauty.

Inmyopinion,weshouldn'tonlypayattentiontobeautiful

appearanceandneglectthebeautificationofthemindandwhatweare

aftershouldbetheperfectunityoftheoutwardbeautyandtheinner

beauty.Asweallknow,sofarasobjectsandanimalsare

concerned,thereisonlybeautifulappearancetobementioned,butto

ushumanbeings,althoughtheoutwardbeautyreallymatters,theinner

beautyismuchmoreimportant.ThiswasconfirmedbyafamousRussian

writerinwordsmuchlikethis:

"Apersonis

notlovelyforbeingbeautifulbutbeautifulforbeinglovely."

Here,I'dliketoquotetwotypicalinstancesandI'msure,my

dearfriends,fromthemyou'llfindoutwhatrealbeautyis.

RecentlyIlearnedfromtheradioanunpleasantincidentabouta

wellknownsinger.Sheisverycharmingwithasweetbeautifulvoice

andveryfamousforsingingthesong."DevotionofLove".Notlong

ago,shewasinvitedtoZhejiangProvincetogiveperformance.The

momentshewastoappearonthestage,shesuddenlyaskedformore

reward.Worsestill,afterherrequestwassatisfied,shedidn'tbegin

tosingatonce.Instead,shetookhertimetocountallthemoney

piecebypiece.Thusshekepttheaudiencewaitingforhalfanhour.

Sowhensheatlastshowedupandstartedtosing"Devotionof

Love",amanroseupfromhisseatandshoutedather,"Youdon'thave

anydevotionoflove.Youarenotqualifiedtosingthissong!

"Hearingthis,thesingerstoppedsingingandbegantoshoutabuses

withherfingerpointedattheman.Atthistimethewholeaudience

burstintoanuproar.

Howdisappointedherkeenlistenerswerewhentheylearnedthis!

Itisthesingerherselfwhospoiledherbeautifulimageintheeyes

ofothers.

Now,I'mcomingtoanothertruestory.It'saboutapoor,ordinary

lookingoldwoman.Shewasawidowwithoutanychildren,living

barelyfromhandtomouthbypickingoddsandendsfromrubbishheaps.

However,shetookinmorethantenhomelessorphanssuccessivelyand

managedtobringthemup.Everydayshelaboredfrommorningtill

night.Inordertoearnasmuchmoneyaspossibletoraisethe

childrenandtokeeptheminschool,sheevenwenttoahospital

regularlytosellherblood.Shegotsoweakforthelossofblood

thatshesometimesfellinafaintonherwayhome.

Facingthisaudienceonthestage,Ihavetheexcitingfeelingof

participatinginthemarchofhistory,forwhatwearefacingtoday

ismorethanamerecompetitionorcontest.Itisanassemblyofsome

ofChina'smosttalentedandmotivatedpeople,representativesofa

youngergenerationthatarepreparingthemselvesforthecomingofa

newcentury.

I'mgratefulthatI'vebeengiventhisopportunity,atsucha

historicmoment,tostandhereasaspokesmanofmygenerationandto

takeaseriouslookbackatthepast15years,acrucialperiodfor

everyoneofusandforthisnationaswell.

Thoughitisonlywithinmypowertotellaboutmypersonal

experience,andonlyatinyfragmentofitatthat,itstill

represents,Ibelieve,therootofaspiritwhichhasbeenessential

tomeandtoallthepeoplebredbythepast15years.

Inmyelementaryyears,therewasalittlegirlintheCLASswho

workedveryhardbutsomehowcouldneverdosatisfactorilyinher

lessons.

Theteacheraskedmetohelpher,anditwasobviousthatshe

expectedalotfromme.butasayoungboy,restless,thoughtless,I

alwaystriedtoevadehersoastogetmoretimetoenjoymyself.

Onedaybeforethefinalexam,shecameuptomeandsaid,"Could

youpleaseexplainthistome?

Iwantverymuchtodobetterthis

time."Istartedexplaining,andfinishedinahurry.Pretendingnot

tonoticeherstillconfusedeyes,Iranoffquickly.Nat

surprisingly,sheagaindidverybadlyintheexam.Andtwomonths

later,atthebeginningofthenewsemester,wordcameofherdeath

ofbloodcancer.NooneeverknewaboutthelittletaskIfailedto

fulfill,butIcouldn'tforgivemyself.Isimplycouldn'tforgether

eyes,whichseemtobeasking,"Whydidn'tyoudoalittlemoreto

helpme,whenitwassoeasyforyou?

Whydidn'tyouunderstanda

littlebetterthetrustplacedinyou,sothatIwouldnothaveto

leavethisworldinsuchpainandregret?

"

Iwasabouteightornineyearsoldatthattime,butinawayit

wastheverystartingpointofmylife,forIbegantounderstandthe

word"responsibility"andtolearntoalwaysdomydutiesfaithfully

anddevotedly,fortheimplicationsofthatsacredwordhasdawnedon

me:

themutualneedandtrustofpeople,theco-operationandinter-

reliancewhicharetheveryfoundationofhumansociety.

Laterinmylife,Icontinuedtoexperiencemanyfailures.But

neveragaindidIfeelthatregretwhichstruckmeatthedeathof

thegirl,foritmakesmyheartsatisfiedtothinkthatIhavealways

doneeverythinginmypowertofulfillmyresponsibilitiesasbestI

can.

AsIgrewup,changedandimprovedbythisincidentandmany

othersimilarones,Ibegantoperceivethechangestakingplace

aroundmeandtofindthatsociety,inaway,wasinitsformative

yearslikemyself.Newbuildings,newcommoditiesandnewfashions

appeareveryday.

Newideas,newinformation,newtechnologies.Peoplecantalk

witheachotherfromanycorneroftheearthinamatterofseconds.

Societyisbecomingmorecompetitive.

Wordslikeindividualityandcreativityaregettingmoreemphasis

andmorepeoplearerewardedfortheirhardworkandefforts.Suchis

theerainwhichthisgeneration,growsandmatures.

Suchistheerainwhichthisgenerationwilltakeoverthe

nationfromourfathersandlearntorunit.Yetinthemeantime,

manyproblemsstillexist.

Welearnthatcrimestakeplaceinbroaddaylightwithcrowdsof

peoplelookingonandnotassisting.Wehearthattherearestill

about1millionchildreninthiscountrywhocan'tevenaffordtogo

toelementaryschoolswhileenormoussumsofmoneyarebeing

squanderedawayondinnerpartiesandluxurycars.

Webuyshoddymedicines,ormerelyworthlessjunkinthenameof

medicines,thataggravate,ratherthanalleviateourdiseasessince

money,manypeoplebelieve,isthemostimportantthingintheworld

thatmustbemade,evenattheexpenseofmoralityandresponsibility.

Suchanera,therefore,determinesthatweareagenerationwith

akeenersenseofcompetitionandefficiencyandagreaterreadiness

tothinkcriticallyandactcreatively.

Suchanera,furthermore,demands,thatweareagenerationwitha

clearperceptionofourhistoricalresponsibilityandanaggressive

willtotakeactionandsolvetheproblems.Historyhaslongbeen

preparingthesequalitiesinthisgenerationanditisnowcallingus

forwardtogivetestimonytoourpatriotismandheroismtowardsthis

nationandallhumanity.

Standingherenow,Ithinkofthepast15yearsofmylifeasan

ordinarystudent.ProbablyI'llbeanordinarymanfortherestofmy

life.Butthisdoesn'tdiscouragemeany,forIknowthatwithmy

senseofresponsibilityanddevotedeffortstoalwaysstrive,forthe

best,it'sgoingtobeameaningfulandworthwhilelifethatIwill

beliving.

Standingherenow,Ithinkofthepast15yearsofthisnation,

whichhasachievedgreatnessthatinspiredmillionsofpeopleofmy

age,mostofwhomwillnotattainfameorprestigeandonlyafewof

whomwillberememberedbyposterity.Butthatdoesn'tdiscourageus

any,becauseweknowthattheworldwatches,theworldlistens,the

worldiswaitingtoseewherethisnationwillbeheadinginatime

ofrichopportunitiesandfiercecompetition.

Ican'teverforgetthatlittlegirlinmyCLASSwhocouldn'thad

thesameopportunitiesasanyofusheretoenjoyawonderfullife

todayandahopefulworldtomorrow.

Itisthesacredresponsibilityofthisgenerationtofaceupto

thechallengesofthenewcenturyandtodevoteoursweatandblood,

ourwisdomandpassion,tothehistoriccauseofmakingthisnationa

greaterandhappierlandforeveryoneofus.

Wearenotgoingtoevadethatresponsibility.Wearegoingtolet

peopledown.Andpeople,farandnear,willhearofus.Frostwillbe

broughttotheirbackbonesandtearstotheireyeswhenourstories

aretoldandretold,Soletusgoforth,myfellowmembersofthis

luckilychosengeneration,andmeetthenewcenturyinvictoryand

glory.
