JohnF.Akers（1934-）从1985年至1993年期间担任IBM公司董事长兼CEO。

作为耶鲁大学毕业生,Mr.Akers从海军航母飞行员服役后于I960年在旧金山市作为销售培训生加入IBM公司。

完成各种营销任务后，他于1974年38岁时被任命为IBM最大的国内销售部门一数据处理部总裁。

1976年成为公司副总裁，1982年公司高级副总裁和1983年出任总裁。

ethics.Letmeurgeattheoutsetthatallofusinmanagementlookatboththesewords一ethicsandcompetitiveness-withawideangleofvision.WhenwethinkofcompetitivenessweshouldthinknotjustasAmericans,Europeans,orJapaneseseekingourownselfishbeggar-thy-neighboradvantage,butasmanagersstrivingtosucceedinanincreasinglyinterdependentworld,withthepotentialforimprovedlivingstandardsforall.Andwhenwethinkofethics,weshouldthinknotjustasmanagersfocusingonanarrowpreservelabeledbusinessethics,butascitizensofalargesociety.

道德与竞争是密不可分的。

我们是作为整个社会在竞争。

如果人人在背后相互伤害，相互偷窃，因为不相信任何人，每一件事都需要公证人来公证，所有小的争吵都要以诉讼来结束，政府通过制定大量的法规法律，束缚商业的手脚来确保其诚信，那么这个社会在任何地方都不会长久和成功的竞争。

Thatisarecipenotonlyforheadachesinrunningacompany;

itisarecipeforanationtobecomewasteful,inefficient,andnoncompetitive.Thereisnoescapingthisfact:

thegreaterthemeasureofmutualtrustandconfidenceintheethicsofasociety,thegreateritseconomicstrength.

道德不仅仅是解决公司运营中头疼问题的处方，也是解决一个民族浪费、低效和缺乏竞争力的灵丹妙药。

这是一个不容质疑的事实：

一个社会在道德方面互相信任的程度越高，他的经济就越强盛。

vebeentumblingdownhill.Wedofaceethicalandcompetitiveproblems,tobesure.Wehaveallbeenreadingaboutreligiousleaderswhostealfromtheircongregations,WallStreetbrokerswhoprofitfromtheirinsiderstatus,assortedpoliticiansandinfluencepeddlers,lawstudentswhoplagiarize,medicalprofessorswhofalsifytheirresearchresults,andPentagonemployeeswhosellclassifiedinformation.ButmostofuscanagreewithThomasJeffersonthatallhumanbeingsareendowedwithamoralsense一thattheaveragefarmerbehindaplowcandecideamoralquestionaswellasauniversityprofessor.LikeJefferson,wecanhaveconfidenceinthemaninthestreet,whetherthatstreetisinArmonk,SanFrancisco,orCambridge-orinLondon,Paris,orTokyo.

也不认为在过去的好年月里我们的道德水准就很高，而从那以后就走了下坡路。

Thatcommonmoralsense,however,doesnotcomeoutofnowhereorperpetuateitselfautomatically.Everygenerationmustkeepitaliveandflourishing.Allofuscanthinkofmeanstothisend.Herearethreesuggestions.

EthicalButtresses道德支持力量

First,weshouldfortifythepracticalethicalbuttressesthathelpallofus-fromchildhoodon-knowandunderstandanddoexactlywhatisrequiredofus.Thesimplestandmostpowerfulbuttressistherolemodel:

parentsandotherswhobypreceptandexamplesetusstraightongoodandevil,rightandwrong.Ofalltherolemodelsinmyownlife,Ithinkperhapsthemostdurableismygrandfather-aflintyNewEnglandheadmasterwhoseportraithangsinmyhome.Tothisday,wheneverIgobyitIchecktheknotinmytieandstiffenmybackbone.

首先，我们应该强化现实中的道德支持力量，从孩时起就帮助我们知道、理解、并且能够正确做要求我们做的事。

最简单得和最有效的支持力量是榜样：

父母和其他的人，通过格言和实例帮助我们区分好坏，正确和错
