Abstract

EmmaistheheroineofoneofthenovelswrittenbyJaneAusten（1775-1817）whoisamongthemostwidelyreadwritersinEnglishliterature.Inthenovel,alsonamedEmma,AustenportrayedEmmaasayoung,prettyandsmartgentlewoman,yetshewasnotaperfectorflawlesscharacter.Shedosenotseemtohaveanysenseofherownlimitations.Herself-conceit,meddling,subjectiveandselfishnaturearehermostfatalcharacterflaws.Inthisarticle,wewillgiveadetailedanalysisofEmma'

sflawssupportedbyvariousincidentsasthenovelprogresses.Wewillalsofindoutthemajorfactorsthatcontributetodevelopthesecharacterflaws,whicharethenegativeeffectscausedonherbypeopleveryclosetoher,theconservativelifestyleandalsothesocietyofhertime.

摘要

简奥斯丁（1775-1817）所写的小说中的爱玛是小说中的女主角之一，在英国文学中，她的作品最受欢迎同时也被人们广泛阅读。

JaneAustenistheEnglishnovelistgenerallycreditedwithfirstgivingthenovelitsmoderncharactersthoughhertreatmentofthedetailsofeverydaylifeinprovincialEnglishmiddle-classsociety.ShewasbornonDecember16,1775atthepersonageofStevention,inHampshire,avillageofwhichherfatherwasrector.Shewastheyoungestofsevenchildren.In1801,thefamilymovedtoBath,wheretheyliveduntil1805when,uponthedeathofherfather,thefamilymovedfirsttoSouthamptonandthentoChawtonin1890.ItwasinChawtonthathermajorworkswerecomposed,althoughshebegunasachildtowriteforfamilyamusement.

JaneAustencompletedherfirstseriousnovel,PrideandPrejudice,attwenty-two,publishedin1813.Inthesameyear,shebeganSenseandSensibility.AfterthatNorthangerAbbeywaspublished,butnotpublisheduntilafterJaneAusten’sdeath.

In1814,shecompletedthefirstnovelofhersecondseries,ManifieldPark,whichwaspublishedduringthefall.Sheveryfranklyassuredhersister,Cassandra,thatshewasmoreinterestedingainingmoneyandindependencebyherwritingthaninfame,whichthoroughlysubvertedthetraditionalideathatJaneAustenwasaladymerelyconcernedwithfamiliartrifles.InMarch1815,JaneAustenfinishedhernextnovel,Emmaperhapshermostperfectmatureaccomplishment.

Austendepictedwithasympatheticimaginationthelivesofminorlandedgentry,countryclergymen,andfamiliesinvariouseconomiccircumstancesstrugglingtomaintainorenhancetheirsocialposition.Themosturgentpreoccupationoftheiryoung,well-bredandheroinesandheroesiscourtshipandmarriage.Herinterestlayinlife’slittleconundrumsofsentimentandconduct.

However,forthefirsttimeinherlifeshebecameseriouslyill.PersuasionwasfinishedbyAugust1816.ThelastnovelJaneAustenisSandition,whichshefoundherselfunabletocontinuebeyondthefirstfewuncorrectedchapters.Austendiedattheageofforty-twobecauseofthedisease.

Ingeneral,Austenoccupiesacuriouspositionbetweentheeighteenthandnineteenthcenturies.Herfavoritewriter,whomsheoftenquotesinhernovels,wasDr.SamuelJohnson,thegreatmodelof-eighteenth-centuryclassicismandreason.Herplots,whichoftenfeaturecharactersforgingtheirrespectivewaysthroughanestablishedandrigidsocialhierarchy,bearsimilaritiesto
