Abstract
EmmaistheheroineofoneofthenovelswrittenbyJaneAusten(1775-1817)whoisamongthemostwidelyreadwritersinEnglishliterature.Inthenovel,alsonamedEmma,AustenportrayedEmmaasayoung,prettyandsmartgentlewoman,yetshewasnotaperfectorflawlesscharacter.Shedosenotseemtohaveanysenseofherownlimitations.Herself-conceit,meddling,subjectiveandselfishnaturearehermostfatalcharacterflaws.Inthisarticle,wewillgiveadetailedanalysisofEmma'

JaneAustenistheEnglishnovelistgenerallycreditedwithfirstgivingthenovelitsmoderncharactersthoughhertreatmentofthedetailsofeverydaylifeinprovincialEnglishmiddle-classsociety.ShewasbornonDecember16,1775atthepersonageofStevention,inHampshire,avillageofwhichherfatherwasrector.Shewastheyoungestofsevenchildren.In1801,thefamilymovedtoBath,wheretheyliveduntil1805when,uponthedeathofherfather,thefamilymovedfirsttoSouthamptonandthentoChawtonin1890.ItwasinChawtonthathermajorworkswerecomposed,althoughshebegunasachildtowriteforfamilyamusement.
JaneAustencompletedherfirstseriousnovel,PrideandPrejudice,attwenty-two,publishedin1813.Inthesameyear,shebeganSenseandSensibility.AfterthatNorthangerAbbeywaspublished,butnotpublisheduntilafterJaneAusten’sdeath.
In1814,shecompletedthefirstnovelofhersecondseries,ManifieldPark,whichwaspublishedduringthefall.Sheveryfranklyassuredhersister,Cassandra,thatshewasmoreinterestedingainingmoneyandindependencebyherwritingthaninfame,whichthoroughlysubvertedthetraditionalideathatJaneAustenwasaladymerelyconcernedwithfamiliartrifles.InMarch1815,JaneAustenfinishedhernextnovel,Emmaperhapshermostperfectmatureaccomplishment.
Austendepictedwithasympatheticimaginationthelivesofminorlandedgentry,countryclergymen,andfamiliesinvariouseconomiccircumstancesstrugglingtomaintainorenhancetheirsocialposition.Themosturgentpreoccupationoftheiryoung,well-bredandheroinesandheroesiscourtshipandmarriage.Herinterestlayinlife’slittleconundrumsofsentimentandconduct.
However,forthefirsttimeinherlifeshebecameseriouslyill.PersuasionwasfinishedbyAugust1816.ThelastnovelJaneAustenisSandition,whichshefoundherselfunabletocontinuebeyondthefirstfewuncorrectedchapters.Austendiedattheageofforty-twobecauseofthedisease.
