OnMay2,theshiptraveledeastandstoppednexttoalargechunkoficearound50milesfromthesmallislandofHopen.Marchenkopreparedtoleadhisstudentsoutontotheice.

“WewerereadytogobutwhenIwentout,Idiscoveredmanycracks(裂缝)around,”heremembers.

Hedecidedtomovetheshipdeeperintotheicetokeepsafe.Thefartherintheywent,hethought,thehardertheicewouldbecome.Astheypushedforward,however,theshipexperiencedsmallwaves,andthenbiggerones.Soon,thewavesbrokeuptheicearoundtheshipintothousandsofsmallerpieces.
