EssentialConceptsandTheories
A.Factorsleadingtosportsinjuries
Potentialrisksareinheritedindifferentphysicalactivitiesbecauseoftheirnature.Bodypartsmaybeinjuredandmostoftheseinvolvethemuscular-skeletalsystem,suchasbones,jointsandsofttissues(examplesincludemuscles,tendons,capsules,bursaeandligaments).Ifoneisfamiliarwiththesefactors,thereisagreaterchanceofinjurypreventionorlesseningthedegreeofinjury.
i)Environmentalfactors–Theyarethepotentialriskyfactorsinducinginjuriesduringphysicalactivities.Injuriesoccurifoneisunawareoftheenvironmentalfactorswhichincludeweather,facilitiesandequipment.
Weather-Hightemperatureandhumiditywillhinderheatdissipation.Thismayinduceheatcramps,heatexhaustionandheatstroke.Coldconditionisassociatedwithhypothermia.Rainorveryhighrelativehumiditycanleadtoalackofmovementcontrol.Furthermore,thechanceofsufferingfromstressinducedbyairpollutionishigherforpeoplewithrespiratoryorcardiovasculardiseases.Insuchcircumstances,weshouldrefertotheAirPollutionIndexandrelevantguidelinesprovidedbytheEnvironmentalProtectionDepartmenttodecidewhetherornottocontinuephysicalactivitiesconductedoutdoors.
ii)Facilitiesandequipment–Thefacilitiesandequipmentforvarioussportsaredifferent,thatenoughspaceisavailableforconductingactivities.Weshouldalsoconsiderthematerialandthehardnessofthefloorsurfaceandthesequenceofthephysicalactivitiestobeheld.Thiswillreducethechanceofsportsinjuries.Tosafeguardparticipants’safety,sportsfacilitiesandequipment,suchasgoalpostsandgymnasticapparatus,shouldberegularlycheckedandmaintainedinagoodconditiontoensurethattheymeetthenecessarysafetyrequirements.
