“Modsnake”isarobotthatwasmodeledonsnakes.ThisrobotwasdevelopedbytheCarnegieMellonUniversityBioroboticsLab.Itismadetomovelikeasnake,soitcanpassthroughnarrowspaces,moveoverallsortsofobstacles,climbpoles,andevenswim.ThewayModsnakemovesmakesitusefulforavarietyoftaskssuchascheckingforsurvivorsinfallenbuildings,findingdamagedareasinsideofpipesandcleaningupoilspillsinlakesandrivers.
Athirdrobot,basedoncockroaches,alsohasseveraluses.“Sprawl”wasdesignedbyaresearchteamatStanfordUniversitytotakevideosandrecoversmallobjects.Likemanysix-leggedrobots,Sprawlwasmadetomovelikeaninsect.However,Sprawlisuncommonlyfastandstrongforitssize,justlikearealcockroach.Thesecharacteristicsmakeitparticularlyusefulformilitarysituationsinwhichanenemymighttrytodisableit.Itisverydifficulttoshootbecauseitmovesquicklyandisrelativelysmall.EvenifanenemyshootsSprawl,itcanusuallykeepfunctioning.

Salingerestablishedhisreputationwithasinglenovel,TheCatcherintheRye(1951),animmediatebestsellerwhichstillsells250,000copiesperyear.Themaincharacter,HoldenCaulfield,isasensitive,rebellious(叛逆的)teenagerexperiencingthegrowingpainsofhighschool.
Salingerdidnotdomuchtohelppublicisehismasterpieceandaskedthathisphotographshouldnotbeusedinconnectionwithit.ThepublicattentionwhichfollowedthesuccessofthebookledhimtomovefromNewYorktothefarawayhillsofCornish,NewHampshire.Sincethelate1960shehastriedtoescapepublicity.In1974hetoldareporterthathelikedtowritebutthathewroteforhimselfandhisownpleasure.
