Chineseclassicstranslation,aconcentratedreflectionofChinesetraditionalculture,aimstoconstructglobalculturaldiversityandtomaintainethnicculturalidentity.TheprofoundChineseCivilizationhasalonghistorywhichisuniqueintheworld.Chineseclassics,theessenceofChineseCivilization,areofspiritualvaluetothewholeworld.Chinesepeopleshouldnotonlytakeadvantageoftheseclassics,butalsoaccepttheresponsibilityofpropagatingthemtotheworld.
Recently,manyscholarsandtranslatorsconductresearchonChineseclassicstranslation.Althoughtheyhavetakengreatstepsforward,therearestillmanyproblems.AnoverviewoftheChineseclassicstranslationsbothathomeandabroad,especiallytheoverseasones,showthatthereareasubstantialportionofChineseclassicsanalyzed,comprehendedandtranslatedonthebasisofthestandardofwesternphilosophy,theologyandmoralphilosophy.ThesetranslationscannotreflectthehistoryoftheChinesenationandChina’sdevelopmentfaithfully.Besides,theycannotfollowcloselythethemeandinnerruleofChinesevalueandideology.Therefore,howtointroduceourChineseculturetotheWesternworldbecomesamajordebate.
However,becauseofthelimitationsofmanpower,thesegloriousChineseclassicsarestilllargelyunknownbymany.Accordingtothestatistics,thereareabout35,000classicsinChinaaltogether,butonly2/1000ofthemhavebeentranslatedintoforeignlanguages.Thecurrentsituationisthatabout106,800westernclassicshavebeentranslatedintoChineseinthe20thcentury,butonly1000Chineseclassicswritteninthe20thcenturyhavebeentranslatedintootherlanguages(王岳川,2004:
10).ThisfactprovesthatChineseclassicstranslationisourforemostweaknessinthefieldofliterarytranslation(汪榕培,1995:
