In2008IcameupwithatechniqueusingtheBrushToolinPhotoshoptocreateadigitalbokeheffect.ThenImixeditwithsomegradientcolorsblendedalltogether.TheeffecthasbecomequitepopularsoIdecidedtoupgradealittlebittheeffect.

SointhistutorialIwillshowyouhowtocreateadigitalbokeheffectwithhexagons.Wewillusethebrushengine,patterns,blendmodesandbasicfilterstoachievethiseffect.

Step1

OpenPhotoshopandcreateanewdocument,I'musing2560x1440pixelssoIcanuseitaswallpaper.Fillthebackgroundlayerwithaverydarkgrey（#181818）.

Step2

Addanotherlayerandfillitwithagradientusingdarkyellow,redandblueforthecolors.Use30ºfortheangle.AfterthatchangetheBlendModetoOverlay.

Step3

AddanewlayerandgotoFilter>Render>Clouds.Makesureyouhaveblackandwhiteforthebackgroundandforegroundcolors.AfterthatgotoFilter>Blur>GaussianBlur.Use70to100fortheAmount,thenchangetheBlendModetoColorDodge.

Step4

Nowlet'screateahexagonshapetouseasbrush.SelectthePolygonTool（U）andcreateanhexagonwithblack.AfterthatgotoLayer>LayerStyles>Strokes.Use7pixelsfortheSizeandInsideforthePosition.AfterthatgotoBlendingOptions:

CustomandchangetheFillOpacityto50%.

TocreatethebrushjustselectthehexagonbyholdingCommand（mac）/Control（pc）andclickingonthethumbofthelayer,thengotoEdit>DefineBrush.Nameyourbrushandgetbacktothedocumentwiththedesign.

Step5

GotoWindown>Brushes.SelectShapeDynamicsanduse40%fortheJitter.Keeptheothervaluesthesame.ThenselectScattering,selectBothAxesfortheScatteranduse700%forthevalue.ThelastthinghereisTransfer.Use40%fortheOpacityJitterandkeeptheothervalueswith0%.

Step6

Addanewlayerandgroupthisnewlayer,itwillbeinsideafolder.ChangetheBlendModeofthefoldertoColorDodge.WiththeBrushTool（B）,selectthehexagonsbrushwecreatedinthepreviousstep,thenusingwhitepaintthelayerwithsomehexagons.

Step7

GotoFilter>Blur>GaussianBlur.Use2.0pixelsfortheRadius.

Step8

DuplicatethelayerandthengotoFilter>Blur>GaussianBluragain,thistimehoweveruse5pixelsfortheRadius.ChangetheFillOpacityto60%.AlsowiththeEraserTool（E）deletesomeareasthatmightgettoobright.

Step9

SelectthefolderintheLayerPaletteandgotoLayer>AddLayerMask>RevealAll.SelectthelayermaskthumbandgotoFilter>Render>Clouds.AfterthatgotoFilter>Blur>GaussianBlur.Use20pixelsfortheRadius.Applyingthecloudsfliterwiththemaskwillhidesomeareasbasedonthecloudscolors.

Step10

AddanewlayerontopoftheothersandtheselectthePaintBucketTool（G）,changethetypetoPatternandselectastrippedpattern,theoneIusedyoucandownloadithere.Afterthatrotateit30º.Youwillhavetoduplicatethelayerandmoveitthenewcopytofillthewholescreen.SelectbothlayersandgotoLayer>MergeLayers.

ChangetheBlendModetoOverlayandonceagainaddalayermaskandapplythecloudsfilterwithblurinthelayermaskaswedidinthepreviousstep.

Step11

Addanewlayerandthengroupthisnewlayerintoafolder.ChangetheBlendModeofthefoldertoColorDodgethenselecttheBrushTool（B）.Witharoundedandverysoftbrush;usewhiteforthecolorandpaintsomelightflares.

Step12

Addanewlayerstillinsidethisfolder.GettheGradientTool（G）andthenclickonthegradienttoopentheGradientEditor.ChangetheTypetoNoise,theRoughnessto100%andselectbothOptions:

RestricColorsandAddTransparency.FillthelayerusingthisgradientbutusinganAngleGradienttype.

Step13

WiththelayerwiththeAnglegradientselectedgotoFilter>Blur>GaussianBlur.Use10pixelsfortheRadius.Afterthatwiththebrushtool,addanotherlightspotexactlyinthemiddleoftheanglegradient.

Step14

Addalayerontopoftheothers,thenfillthislayerwithblack.withtheEraserTool（E）andabigsoftandroundedbrush,deletethecenterafewtimesuntilyouhavecreatedavignetteeffect.Theideahereistodarkentheedgesofthedesign.

Step15

Selectalllayersandduplicatethem,afterthat,withallduplicatedlayersselectedgotoLayer>MergeLayers.ThenextthingtodoistogotoFilter>Blur>GaussianBlur.Use15pixelsfortheRadius.

Step16

Duplicatethisblurrylayersoyouwillhave2layers.ForthefirstonechangetheBlendModetoOverlayandtheOpacityto40%.Forthesecondone,theonethatwillbeontopoftheothers,useScreenfortheBlendModeand30%fortheOpacity.

Conclusion

ThisisaverysimpleeffecttocreateinPhotoshop,andasyoucanseewedidn'tuseanyspecialpluginorstockphotos,wejustusedbasicfilters,thebrushengineandsomeblendmodes.TherearelotsofthingswecancreateinPhotoshopandthesetypesofabstracteffectsaremyfavorite.Nowit'suptoyoutocomeupwithyourown!
