Britainliesoffthenorth-westcoastofmainlandEurope.ItsfullnameistheUnitedKingdomofGreatBritainandNorthernIreland.GreatBritainprisingEngland,ScotlandandWales.AlthoughBritainisaunitarystate,theconstituentcountrieshaveseparatenationalidentities,variationsincultureandtradition,anddifferentphysicalcharacteristics.

Englandispredominantlyalowlandcountry,withuplandregionsinthenorth（suchasthePennineChain.tileCambrianmountainsandtheYorkshiremoorlands）andthedownsincentralsouthernEngland,whicharelowchalkhillranges.Walesisacountryofhillsandmountains,thehighestbeingSnowdonat1085m（3560ft）.Britain'shighestmountain,BenNevis（1343m,4406ft）,isinthecentralhighlandsofScotland,whichcontainslargeareasofwild,unspoiltlandscape.NorthernIrelandisatitsnearestpointonly21kin（13miles）fromScotland.Ithasa488km（303mile）borderinthesouthandwestwiththeIrishRepublic.AtitscentreliesLoughNeagh,Britain'slargestfresh-waterlake（396sq.km153sq.miles）.
