Britainliesoffthenorth-westcoastofmainlandEurope.ItsfullnameistheUnitedKingdomofGreatBritainandNorthernIreland.GreatBritainprisingEngland,ScotlandandWales.AlthoughBritainisaunitarystate,theconstituentcountrieshaveseparatenationalidentities,variationsincultureandtradition,anddifferentphysicalcharacteristics.

Withanareaofsome242000sq.km(93000sq.mil.),Britainisjustunder1000km(about600miles)fromthesouthcoasttotheextremenorthofScotlandandjustunder500km(300miles)acrossinthewidestpart.

Englandispredominantlyalowlandcountry,withuplandregionsinthenorth(suchasthePennineChain.tileCambrianmountainsandtheYorkshiremoorlands)andthedownsincentralsouthernEngland,whicharelowchalkhillranges.Walesisacountryofhillsandmountains,thehighestbeingSnowdonat1085m(3560ft).Britain'shighestmountain,BenNevis(1343m,4406ft),isinthecentralhighlandsofScotland,whichcontainslargeareasofwild,unspoiltlandscape.NorthernIrelandisatitsnearestpointonly21kin(13miles)fromScotland.Ithasa488km(303mile)borderinthesouthandwestwiththeIrishRepublic.AtitscentreliesLoughNeagh,Britain'slargestfresh-waterlake(396sq.km153sq.miles).

Britainhasfrequentweatherchangesthroughtheseasonalcycleofwinter,spring,summerandautumn,althoughtemperaturesrarelyexceed32℃orfallbelow--10℃.Rainfallisfairlywelldistributedthroughouttheyear.

Thelastthousandyearshavewitnessedtheassimilationofallthesestrands--andmanynewonesbesides,followingonfromglobalexploration,theexpansionoftradeandinternationalrivalry,andthegrowthoftheEmpire.

Atthesametimepolitical,social,economicandreligioustrends,pressuresandcriseshaveallevolvedtocreatethebeliefs,lifestyleandexpectationsthatareprevalentamongthepeopletoday.

3.TheRoyalFamily

ManymembersoftheRoyalFamilyundertakeofficialdutiesinBritainandabroad.Theirvariousresponsibilitiesreflecttradition,theirownpersonalinterestsandBritain'sformerimperialstatus.Forexample,amonghermanytitlesthePrincessRoyal(PrincessAnne)isChancelloroftheUniversityofLondon,Colonel-in-ChiefofelevenArmyregiments,includingthe8thCanadianHussarsandtheRoyalNewZealandNursingCorps,andPresidentoftheSavetheChildrenFund,forwhomshehastraveledwidely.
