Tenyearslater,JamesStarley,anEnglishinventor,madeseveralinnovationsthatrevolutionizedbicycledesign.Hemadethefrontwheelmanytimeslargerthanthebackwheel,putagearonthepedalstomakethebicyclemoreefficient,andlightenedthewheelsbyusingwirespokes.Althoughthisbicyclewasmuchlighterandlesstiringtoride,itwasstillclumsy,extremelytop-heavy,andriddenmostlyforentertainment.

Itwasn’tuntil1874thatthefirsttrulymodernbicycleappearedonthescene.InventedbyanotherEnglishman,H.J.Lawson,thesafetybicyclewouldlookfamiliartotoday’scyclists.Thesafetybicyclehadequal-sizedwheels,whichmadeiteasiertoride.Lawsonalsoattachedachaintothepedalstodrivethebackwheel.By1893,thesafetybicyclehadbeenfurtherimprovedwithair-filledrubbertires,adiamond-shapedframe,andeasybraking.WiththeimprovementsprovidedbyLawson。
