Inthepast40years,thetotalnumberofAdéliePenguins(阿德利企鹅)beensteadilydeclining.Anewstudy,however,announcedthediscoveryofapreviouslyunknown“supercolony”ofmorethan1,500,000AdéliePen-gumsintheDangerIslandsoftheAntarcticPeninsula’snortherntip.

Yetin2014,LynchandMathewSchwallerfromNASAdiscoveredguanostains(粪渍)insatellitepicturesoftheislands,whichmeantalargenumberofpenguins.Tofindoutforsure,LynchteamedwithStephanieJenouvrier,MikePolitoandTomHarttoarrangeanexplorationintotheislandswiththegoalofcountingthebirdsfirsthand.

InDecember2015;theyfoundhundredsofbirdsandstartedtocalculatebyhand.Theteamalsousedacommercialdrone(无人机)totakepicturesoftheentireislands.Theythenusedakindofnetworksoftwaretoanalyzethepictures,searchingforthepenguinnestsautonomously.Theaccuracythatthedroneensuredwasthekey.Thenumberofpenguinscouldprovideunderstandingsnotjustonchangeablepenguinpopulation,butalsoontheeffectsofchangingtemperatureandseaiceonthearea’secology.
