VincentWillemvanGogh(30March,1853—29July,1890)wasaDutchPost-Impressionistartist.Heisconsideredoneofthegreatestartistswithgreatinfluenceonthegreatestartistswithgreatinfluenceonthe20th-centuryart.
VanGoghspenthisearlyadultlifeworkingforafirmofartdealers.Afterabriefperiodasateacher,hebecameamissionary(传教士)inaverypoorminingregion.Hedidnotbeginhiscareerasanartistuntil1880;however,duringthelasttenyearsofhislife,heproducedmorethan2,000pieces,includingaround900paintingsand1,100drawingandsketched(素描).HeworkedonlywithsombercoloursuntilhemetImpressionismandNeo-ImpressionisminParis.VanGoghusedtheirbrightcoloursandstyleofpaintinginauniquelyrecognizablestyle.Mostofhisbest-knownworkswereproducedduringhisfinaltwoyears,whenhewassufferingfromseriousmentalillness.
In1890,attheageof37,vanGoghshothimselfinthechest.Hediedtwodayslater,withTheo,hisbrotherandhisbestfriend,athisside,whoreportedhislastwordsas“Thesadnesswilllastforever”.Itwouldnottakelongbeforehisfamegrewhigherandhigher.
VanGogh’smotherthrewawayquiteanumberofhispaintings.Theonlypaintinghesoldduringhislifetime,TheRedVineyard,wascreatedin1888.ItisnowondisplayinthePushkinMuseuminMoscow,Russia.SeveralpaintingsbyvanGoghrankamongthemostexpensivepaintingsintheworld.OnMarch30,1987vanGogh’spaintingIriseswassoldforarecordof$53.9millionatSouthby’s,NewYork.OnMay15,1990hisPortraitofDoctorGachetwassoldfor$83.5millionatChristie’s,thussettinganewpricerecord.
