Scientistswhotrytopredictearthquakeshavegottensomenewhelpersrecently--animals.Animalsoftenseemtoknowinadvancethatanearthquakeiscoming,andtheyshowtheirfearbyactinginstrangeways.Beforeaquake(地震)inChinain1975snakesawokefromtheirwintersleepearlyonlytofreezetodeathinthecoldair.Alltheunusualbehavior,aswellasphysicalchangesinearth,alerted(提醒)Chinesescientiststothecomingquake.Theymovedpeopleawayfromthedangerzoneandsavedthousandsoflives.
Onetaskforscientiststodayistolearnexactlywhichtypesofanimalbehaviorpredictquakes.Itisnotaneasyjob.Firstofallnoteveryanimalreactstothedangerofanearthquake.JustbeforeaCaliforniaquakein1979,forexample,anArabianhorsebecameverynervousandtriestobreakoutofhisstall.Thehorsenexttohim,however,remainedperfectlycalm.Itisalsodifficultsometimestotellthedifferencebetweennormalanimalcalmnessand"earthquakenerves".Azookeeperoncetoldearthquakeresearchersthathiscougar(美洲狮)hadbeenactingstrangely.Itturnedoutthatthecougarhadastomachache.
Asecondtaskforscientistsistofindoutexactlywhatkindsofwarningtheanimalsreceive.Theyknowthatanimalssensefarmoreoftheworldthanhumansdo.Manyanimalscansee,hear,andsmellthingsthatpeopledonotevennotice.Somecandetecttinychangesinairpressure,gravity,orthemagnetism(磁力)ofearth.Thisextrasenseprobablyhelpsanimalspredictearthquakes.
Agoodexampleofthisoccurredwithagroupofdogs.Theywereclosedinanareathatwasbeingshakenbyaseriesoftinyearthquakes.Beforeeachquakealowboomingsoundwasheard.Eachsoundcausedthedogtobark(吠)wildly.Thedogsbegantobarkduringasilentperiod!
Ascientistwhowasrecordingthequakeslookedathismachine.Herealizedthatthedogshadreactedtoaboomingnoise.Theyalsosensedthetinyquakethatfollowedit.Themachinerecordedboth,thoughhumansfeltandheardnothing.
