himthathewasnotamouse,butabat,andthusasecondtime

escaped.

TheAssandtheGrasshopper

ANASShavingheardsomeGrasshopperschirping,washighly

enchanted;and,desiringtopossessthesamecharmsofmelody,

demandedwhatsortoffoodtheylivedontogivethemsuch

beautifulvoices.Theyreplied,"Thedew."TheAssresolvedthat

hewouldliveonlyupondew,andinashorttimediedofhunger.

TheLionandtheMouse

ALIONwasawakenedfromsleepbyaMouserunningoverhisface.

Risingupangrily,hecaughthimandwasabouttokillhim,when

theMousepiteouslyentreated,saying:

"Ifyouwouldonlyspare

mylife,Iwouldbesuretorepayyourkindness."TheLionlaughed

andlethimgo.IthappenedshortlyafterthisthattheLionwas

caughtbysomehunters,whoboundhimbystropestotheround.

TheMouse,recognizinghisroar,camegnawedtheropewithhis

teeth,andsethimfree,exclaim"Youridiculedtheideaofmyever

beingabletohelpyou,expectingtoreceivefrommeanyrepay

mentofyourfavor;Inowyouknowthatitispossibleforevena

MousetoconbenefitsonaLion."

TheCharcoal-BurnerandtheFuller

ACHARCOAL-BURNERcarriedonhistradeinhisownhouse.

TheBoyHuntingLocusts

ABOYwashuntingforlocusts.Hehadcaughtagoodlynumber,
