TheHuaweiQuidwayNetEngine5000E(NE5000E)isthecurrenthigh-endcorerouterofferedbyHuawei.TheNE5000Ewasintroducedin2004andhasbeenupgradedincrementallyoverthelast6years.

Huaweiclaimsthattheyhavesoldover1000NE5000Estomanylargenetworkprovidersinmanycountries.

TheNE5000Eiscomposedofthesamegeneralpartsthatallcorerouteraremadefrom;asystemprocessor,switchfabricandlinecards.HuaweiusesdifferentacronymsthenCiscofortheirhardware.ThesystemprocessoriscalledtheMPU,theswitchfabriciscalledtheSFUandthelinecardiscalledtheLPU.

TherearemultiplelinecardversionsavailablefortheNE5000EfromthefirstgenerationLPU-AtothecurrentLPU-F.FordoingcertainfeaturessuchasNetflow,MPLSVPNandcertaintypesoftunnelingtheNE5000EusesaservicecardcalledtheSPU.ThelinecardsutilizeTCAMsforforwarding,ACLs,ARPTablesandotherfeatures.

TheNE5000EcanbeconnectedtootherNE5000Esdirectlyorthroughaswitchfabricchassistocreateamulti-chassissystemor“Cluster”asHuaweicallsit.Huaweicurrentlyclaimsthattheirlargestcluster,a4+2clustersystemisinproductioninChina.

HuaweidoesnotsupportfabricMulticastreplicationontheNE5000E.Thesourcelinecarddoesthefirsttwomulticastreplicationsandtheotherlinecardshandlingtheotherreplications.DuetothefabricusageofMulticast,UnicasttrafficcanbedroppedbythesystemiftherearetoomanyMulticaatreplicationsofanyonestream.

TheOperatingSystemusedontheNE5000EisVRP.VRPisamonolithicoperatingsystembasedonVxWorks.VRPsupportslimitedsoftwarepatchingandclaimssupportprocessrestart.

NE5000ETimeline

In2002HuaweiintroducedtheNE5000TSR,arebadgedrouterfromanothervendor.Thesystemsupportedupto10GperslotandpromisedperformanceequaltothatofJuniper’sM120andCiscoSystemsGSR.Thisrouterwasreplacedin2004withaHuaweidevelopedsystem,theNE5000E.

TheNE5000EisbasedonthesamechassisastheNE80E.Themaindifferencebetweenthetwosystemsisthefabric.ThefabricintheNE5000Eis40GwhiletheNE80Ewas10Gin2004.CurrentlyboththeNE80EandNE5000Ehave40Gfabrics.

TheNE5000Ewasdesignedin-houseatHuaweitocompetewiththeCiscoCRS-1andtheJuniperT-Series.

ThefirstreleaseoftheNE5000Ehada40Gfabricbutusedthe10GLPU-AlinecardsfromtheNE80E.TheLPU-Aisa10GcapablelinecardthatutilizestheCiscodesignedIntelIXP2800NPU.ThefirstNE5000EspecificlinecardwastheLPU-C.TheLPU-CwasclaimedbyHuaweitosupportupto20Gb/satwire-ratebuthadlimitedmemoryandperformance.Thefirstclaimed40GcapablelinecardwastheLPU-E.TheLPU-Ehasclaimedperformanceofover60Mppsand1MIPv4FIBentries.

ThecurrentincarnationoftheNE5000Ehasa40GFabric,8kWpowersuppliesand40Glinecards.

TheNE5000Eisalsocapableof“Clustering”i.e.Multi-Chassis.WiththeadditionofSFEA(SwitchFabricExtended)fabriccards,thesystemcanconnectback-to-backwithanotherNE5000EortomultipleNE5000Esthroughswitchfabricchassis.

MostoftheforwardingchipsaremadebyaHuaweisub-companycalledHiSilicon.TheHiSiliconSD588isa10GchipandisusedonmanyofthelinecardssuchastheLPUB,LPUC,LPUF.TheHiSiliconSD588NFClookstobea20GchipandisusedintheLPUE.

TherearethreekeypartsthatcombinetogethertocreatetheNE5000E;TheLineProcessingUnit(LPU),SwitchFabricUnit(SFU)andMainProcessingUnit(MPU)

TheLineProcessingUnit(LPU)providesthephysicalinterfacestotheoutsideworld(Ethernet/POS)andconnectstotheSwitchFabricUnit(SFU).

TheSwitchFabricUnit(SFU)connectstheLineProcessingUnits(LPU)togetherallowingpacketstobesentfromcardtocardacrossthefabric.

TheMainProcessingUnit(MPU)isakintotheRouteProcessoroftheCisco12000SeriesRouter.TheMPUrunsthecontrolandmanagementplanesoftheChassis

MPU(MasterProcessingUnit)

TheMainProcessingUnit(MPU)consistsofthemaincontrolunit,systemclockunit,synchronousswitchingclockunitandsystemmaintenanceunit.TheMPUcontrolsandmanagesthesystem.Asthesystemclocksourceandthemanagementandmaintenanceunit,theMPUprovidesthefunctionsofthecontrolplane,switchingplane,andmaintenanceplane.TheMPUrunstheVRP(VersatileRoutingPlatform)softwareandisresponsibleforallofthetasksofastandardrouteprocessor.

TherearetwoversionsoftheMPUcurrently,MPU-Awhichisusedinstand-alonesystemsandtheMPU-BwhichisrequiredforClusteredsystems.TheMPUutilizesaPowerPCprocessorandcomeswith2GBoframanda512MBCFcard.

Thereare4switchfabriccardsintheNE5000E.Thefabricrunsina3+1redundantconfiguration(N+1).Eachfabriccardhas643.125GSerDesconnectionsgivingthem200Geach.TheSerDesconnectionsareshared16perslotacross16slots.Afterencodingthereisabout160Gusable.

TheSwitchFabricUnitrevC(SFUC)isthestandard40Gstand-alonefabricfortheNE5000E.Itisacrossbar-basedfabricdesignedbyDuneNetworks.Thisfabricdoesnotdomulticastreplication.
