Humboldtsetaworldrecordformountainclimbing.Healsomadeadiscovery.Duringhisclimb,Humboldtbecameverysick.Hefoundoutthatthehigherheclimbed,thelessoxygentherewasintheair.Thismadeitmoredifficulttobreathe.Later,thisbecameknownasmountainsickness.

SciencewasanotherpartofHumboldt’sinterests.Hewantedtowriteaboutallofthenewthingshesaw.Hedescribedthenewplants,animals,androckswhichhadneverbeenseenbyscientistsbefore. 

Humboldtalsostudiedthewayoflifeofthelocalpeople.HelearnedhowthenativepeoplealongtheAmazonRiverusedplantsintheirdailylives.Forexample,theyusedastrongpoisonfromavine(蔓生植物)tomakepoisonedarrows.Thenativesusedthesearrowsforhuntingtheirfood.
