smartphonescontainchemicalslikemercury(水银),leadandevenarsenic(砷).Reportedly,oneeggfromafree-rangechickeninAgbogbloshiecontainedacertainchemicalwhichcancausecanceranddamagetheimmunesystematalevelthat'sabout220timesgreaterthanalimitsetbytheEuropeanFoodSafetyAuthority(EFSA).Mostworryingly,thesepoisonouschemicalsarefreetopollutethebroadersoilandwatersystem.Thisshouldconcernusall,sincesomeofGhana'stopexportsarecocoaandnuts.

Somegovernmentshavestartedtotakeresponsibilityfortheirconsumers'waste.Forexample,GermanyhasstartedaprojectthatincludesasustainablerecyclingsystematAgbogbloshie,alongwithahealthclinicforworkers.However,governmentscannotsolvetheproblemalone,asthereisanalmostlimitlessconsumerdemandforhardware,especiallywhengovernmentsgreenpoliciesarefocusedonissueslikeclimatechange.
