Semantics:

Itisabranchoflinguisticswhichisconcernedwiththestudyofmeaninginallitsformalaspects.Wordshaveseveraltypesofmeaning.Asentenceneedstobewellformedbothsyntacticallyandsemantically.

Pragmatics:

Itcanbedefinedasthestudyoflanguageinuse.Itdealswithhowspeakersuselanguageinwayswhichcannotbepredictedfromlinguisticknowledgealone,andhowhearersarriveattheintendedmeaningofspeakers.

Linguistics:

Itcanbedefinedasthescientificorsystematicstudyoflanguage.Itisascienceinthesensethatitscientificallystudiestherules,systemsandprinciplesofhumanlanguages.Itdealswithawiderangeoflinguisticphenomena,analyzesthem,andmakesgeneralstatementsaboutthem.

1.synchronicanddiachroniclinguistics

4.syntagmaticandparadigmaticrelations

Theformerreferstothehorizontalrelationshipbetweenlinguisticelements,whichformlinearsequences.Thelattermeanstheverticalrelationshipbetweenforms,whichmightoccupythesameparticularplaceinastructure.

5.functionalismandformalism

Functionalismreferstothestudyoftheformsoflanguageinreferencetotheirsocialfunctionincommunication.Itconsiderstheindividualasasocialbeingandinvestigatesthewayinwhichshe/heacquireslanguageandusesitinordertocommunicatewithothersinherorhissocialenvironment.Formalismorformallinguisticsisthestudyoftheabstractformsoflanguageandtheirinternalrelations.Itfixesontheformsoflanguagesasevidenceoftheuniversalswithoutconsideringhowtheseformsfunctionincommunicationandthewaysofsociallifeindifferentcommunities.
