Doctorsofferedthefollowingbehavioralinterventionsforimprovingsleep:
reducetimeinbed;getupatthesametimeeveryday,regardlessofsleepduration;don'tgotobedunlesssleepy;anddon'tstayinbedunlessasleep.
Theother40participantsinthestudyweregivenprintededucationalmaterialsaboutinsomnia,whichincludedthesameinstructionsgiventotheinterventiongroup,butwithouttheindividualizedsessionswithatherapist.Twoweekslater,thelattergroupalsogota10-minutefollow-upphonecall.
Attheendoffourweeks,thebehavioraltreatmentgroupwassignificantlymorelikelytoshowimprovementsinsleepthantheprinted-materialsgroup.Bythattime,55%ofthosewhoreceivedbehavioraltreatmentnolongermetthecriteriaforinsomnia,comparedwith13%ofthegroupthatgoteducationalbrochures.
