Heroism:
Heroismofcoursehasbeenadmired.Butthisman’sheroismwasunusual.Peopleusuallyexpectrevolutionariestodiemartyrs;truebelieverstobewillingtodiefortheirfaith;peoplereadytolaydowntheirlivesinperformingtheirduty;evenpeopletoshowcourageintheirattempttowinpower,influence,moneyortosavetheirlovedones.Butthemaninthewaterdidnotfitanyofthesedescriptions.
Themaninthewaterdidnothavetogivehisringstoothers;hedidnotevenknowthesepeople.Hewasextraordinarypreciselybecausehewasordinary.Heshowedwhateveryoneofuscoulddo.Thedisplayofhisheroismwasasongtothebeautifulhumancharacter.Thisistrueheroism.
ØBackground
ThisisshortessayaboutanaircrashthattookplaceinthecapitaloftheUSintheyear1982.AplanetookofffromtheWashingtonNationalAirportanddidnotclearthebridgeoverthePotomacRiverbecauseofthethickiceonthewings.Ithitthebridgeandfellrightintotheriver,bringingallthepassengerstoinstantdeathexceptsixfromthetailsectionwhofoundthemselvesgaspingandstrugglingintheicywater.Onlyfivepeoplesurvived,andtheywereabletosurvivebecauseoffourheroes.Theauthorwrotethisessayinpraiseoftheseheroes,threeofwhomhadriskedtheirlivestorescuethesurvivorsandwereabletolivetotellthestory,butthemanthatreallyheldthewholenation’sattentionwasthefourthmanwhohadkeptpushinghislifelineandfloatationringstoothersuntilhewentunder.
ThefactthatthisherohappenedtobeanAmericanshouldremindusthatheroismisnotanationaltrait.Nonationhasamonopolyofthishumanspirit.Overtheyears,however,therehasalwaysbeenprejudiceagainstdifferentracesandethnicgroups.WhensomepeopletalkabouttheAmericancharacterforexample,theysometimesgotoextremes.Butblindhatredisjustaswrongasblindworship.TheUShastheirshareofhumantrashofcourse,buttheyalsohavenumerousdecent,honest,bravepeopleliketheoneinthewater,whohavemadetheircountryagreatcountryandtheirpeopleagreatpeople.Anditisthissideoftheirnationalcharacterthatweshouldlearnfrom.
