Halfofthegrandparentswhocaredforgrandchildrenwerestillalivetenyearsaftertheinitialinterview.Thesamewastrueforparticipantswhodidnothavegrandchildrenbutsupportedtheiradultchildreninsomeway,suchashelpingwithhousework.Incontrastabouthalfoftheparticipantswhodidnothelpothersdiedwithinfiveyearsafterthestartofthestudy.

“Caregivingmaybethoughtalsoasanactivitythatkeepscaregiversphysicallyandmentallyactive,saidProfessorArpino,addingthatpreviousstudiessuggestthatcaregivingmayimprovecognitivefunctioning,mentalandphysicalhealth.

Morethanathirdofthetimesthebirds“loggers”detectedradarsignals,andthereforeaboat,butnosuchboatappearedintheofficiallog—meaningthatthevehicleshadlikelyswitchedofftheirAIS—somethingthatprobablyhappensinillegalfishingoperations.

Theworksuggestsbirdscouldbeaneffectiveboat-monitoringtoolaslongasillegalfishingoperationsdon’ttargetthebirds.

Fortunately,suchataskwouldbedifficult.Aroundfishingboats,youcanfindhundredsofbirdsatanyonetimethatareflyingaround.Andthebirdswithloggersarenotmarkedinanyway.Soit’snotreallypossibleforfishermentopickoutaspecificbird.
