Santiagoanalyzedinformationfrom35first-timemotherswhosechildrenwereages10to24months,and35womenwhohadneverbeenpregnant.Bothgroupsscoredsimilarlyonintelligencetests.Theaverageageofmotherswas29andtheaverageageofnever-pregnantwomenwas27.

Totestvisuospatialmemory,thewomenwereshownapapercontainingsixsymbolsfor10seconds,andthenaskedtodrawwhattheyremembered.Thistaskwasrepeatedseveraltimes.Thefirsttimewomenwereshownthepaper,bothgroupsrememberedaboutthesameamount.Butonthesecondandthirdpass,mothersperformedbetterthanthosewithoutchildren,indicatingthatthemotherscollectedmoreinformationeachtimethantheotherwomen.
