Withtheincreasingdemandonstorageresources,asorganizationsrelymoreheavilyondatathaneverbefore,ITadministratorsfacethechallengeofoverseeingalargerandmorecomplexstorageinfrastructure,whileatthesametime,trackingthekindofinformationavailableinit.Today,managingstorageresourcesnotonlyincludesdatasizeandavailabilitybutalsotheenforcementofcompanypoliciesandaverygoodunderstandingofhowexistingstorageisbeingused,allowingforsoundstrategicplanningandproperresponsetoorganizationalchanges.

FileServerResourceManagerisasuiteoftoolsthatallowsadministratorstounderstand,control,andmanagethequantityandtypeofdatastoredontheirservers.ByusingFileServerResourceManager,administratorscanplacequotasonvolumes,activelyscreenfilesandfolders,andgeneratecomprehensivestoragereports.Thissetofadvancedinstrumentsnotonlyhelpstheadministratortoefficientlymonitorexistingstorageresources,butitalsoaidsintheplanningandimplementationoffuturepolicychanges.

ByusingFileServerResourceManager,youcanperformthefollowingtasks:

Filescreeningmanagement

∙Create,manage,andobtaininformationaboutfilescreens,whichareusedtoblockselectedfiletypesfromavolumeorfolder.Whenusersattempttosaveunauthorizedfiles,sendane-mailtotheadministratorsorgeneratesimilarnotifications.

YoucansetFileServerResourceManageroptionsintheFileServerResourceManagerOptionsdialogbox.Theseoptionsincludedefaulte-mailnotificationsettings,defaultparametersforstoragereports,andothersettingsthatapplytomultipletasks.Someofthesesettingscanbemodifiedwhenyouworkwithquotasorscreenfiles,orgeneratestoragereports.

2.IntheFileServerResourceManagerOptionsdialogbox,clickatab:

E-mailNotifications,NotificationLimits,StorageReports,ReportLocations,orFileScreenAudit.

3.Entersettingsspecificforyourserverenvironment.

Tosende-mailnotificationstoadministratorsortouserswhoexceedquotasorattempttosaveunauthorizedfiles,ortosendstoragereportsovere-mail,specifytheSMTPservertouseandthedefaulte-mailsettingsintheE-mailNotificationstab.

Ifyouwillbegeneratingreportstomonitorfilescreening,selecttheRecordfilescreeningactivityinauditingdatabasecheckboxintheFileScreenAudittab.Thiswilllogfilescreeningactivityintheauditingdatabase,sothatitcanbeusedlatertogenerateFileScreeningAuditreports.

ManagingStorageResourcesonaRemoteComputer

Tomanagestorageresourcesonaremotecomputer,youcanconnecttothecomputerfromFileServerResourceManager.Whileyouareconnected,FileServerResourceManagerwilldisplaytheobjectscreatedontheremotecomputer,allowingyoutomanagetheminthesamewaythatyoucanmanageresourcesonyourlocalcomputer.

TomanageremotestorageresourceswithFileServerResourceManager:

∙TheremotecomputermustberunningWindowsServer 2008withFileServerResourceManagerinstalled.

∙EnabletheRemoteFileServerResourceManagerManagementexceptionontheremotecomputer.ThisexceptioncanbeenabledbyusingWindowsFirewallinControlPanel.
