Iknewoneofthesemen.Aslongashisfatherandmotherlived,hewasmoreorlesstakencareof;butassoonastheoldpeopleweregone,aterriblelifestartedforhim.Dependentonasisterofhis,everybodyinthefarmhousetreatedhimasabeggar.Althoughhisbrother-in-lawhadtakenpossessionofhisshareoftheinheritance(遗产),hewashelpedonlytosoup,gettingjustenoughtosavehimfromstarvation.Hisfacewasverypalewithtwobigwhiteeyes.Heremainedunmovedatallthebadremarksonhim,sounkindthatonecouldnottellwhetherhefeltthem.Moreover,hismotherhadalwaystreatedhimunkindlyandcaredverylittleforhim;forincountryplacesuselesspersonsareconsideredatrouble,andthepeasantswouldbegladtokilltheweakoftheirspecies,aschickensdo.
Assoonashefinishedhissoup,hewentandsatoutsidethedoorinsummerandinwinterbesidethefireside,anddidnotmoveagainalltheevening.Forsomeyearsthingswentoninthisfashion.Buthisincapacityforworkeventuallyangeredhisrelatives.Atlasthewasforcedtobeg.Butthepeasantsweren’tgenerous,andforweekshedidn’tbringbackapenny.Onewinterthegroundwascoveredwithsnow,anditwasfreezinghard.Hisbrother-in-lawledhimonemorningagreatdistanceinorderthathemightdohisjobbetter.Theblindmanwasleftthereallday;Whennightcameon,thebrother-in-lawtoldthepeopleofhishousethathecouldn’tfindthebeggar.Thenheadded:

Afterlonghoursofwaiting,feelingthathewasdyingfromcoldness,theblindmanbegantowalk.Beingunabletofindhiswayalongtheroad,hisonlyobjectbeingtofindsomehousewherehecouldtakeshelter.Butthefallingsnowmadehimunabletowalkfarther,sohesatdowninthemiddleofanopenfield.Hedidnotgetupagain.Thesnowwhichfellcontinuouslyburiedhim,andnothingwaslefttoindicatetheplacewherehelay.
Hisrelativesmadeapretence(假象)ofsearchingforhimforaboutaweek.Theyevenmadeashowofweeping.Thewinterwassevere,andthesnowdidn’tmeltquickly.OneSunday,somefarmersnoticedagreatflightofcrows,whichwereflyingabovetheopenfield,andthenfallinglikeashowerofblackrainatthesamespot,evergoingandcoming.Thefollowingweekthesebirdswerestillthere.Ayoungfellowwenttoseewhattheyweredoinganddiscoveredthebodyoftheblindman,alreadyhalfeaten.
