Microorganism

BeforeFrenchchemistLouisPasteurbeganexperimentingwithbacteriainthe1860s,peopledidnotknowwhatcauseddisease.Henotonlydiscoveredthatdiseasecamefrommicroorganisms,butalsorealizedthatbacteriacouldbekilledbyheatanddisinfectant(消毒剂).Thisideacauseddoctorstowashtheirhandsanddisinfecttheirinstruments,whichhassavedmillionsoflives.

Xrays

Penicillin

Antibioticsarepowerfuldrugsthatkilldangerousbacteriainourbodiesthatmakeussick.In1928,BritishAlexanderFlemingdiscoveredthefirstantibiotic,penicillin,whichhegrewinhislab.Withoutantibiotics,infectionslikestrepthroatcouldbedeadly.

DNA

OnFebruary28,1953,JamesWatsonoftheUnitedStatesandFrancisCrickofEnglandmadeoneofthegreatestscientificdiscoveriesinhistory.ThetwoscientistsfoundthestructureofDNA.OurgenesaremadeofDNAanddeterminewhatcolorhairandeyeswe'llhave.In1962,theywereawardedtheNobelPrizeforthiswork.Thediscoveryhashelpeddoctorsunderstanddiseasesandmaysomedaypreventsomeillnesseslikeheartdiseaseandcancer.
