SanjaySeshan,15,attendsDorseyvilleMiddleSchoolinPittsburgh,Pa.HepresentedhisresearchhereatthefinalsoftheBroadcomMASTERSsciencecompetition.Hefirstbecameawareoflarge-scalewaterleakswhiletravelingthroughapoorareainIndia.There,herecallsseeingjust“onecommunitypipeanditwasleakingwatereverywhere.”Whenhereturnedhome,SanjaydidsomeworkandlearnedthatU.S.water-deliveryequipmentwasdeteriorating,too,whichincludedabout240,000breakseachyearinwatermains.Thismeansahugewasteofmoneyandcleanwater.

ThismadeSanjaystarttoexplorehowhemightlookfordamageinburiedwaterpipes.Inspiredbyaclarinet（黑管）,heattachedatinybutpowerfulspeakertotheoutsideofaplasticpipe.Nextheputonesmallmicrophonenearthespeakerandanothermuchfartheraway.Then,heusedacomputerprogramtosendelectricalsignalstothespeaker.Thosesignalscausedthespeakertoshakeatparticularfrequencies.Theresultsshowedthepipetransmitted（传输）somefrequenciesbetterthanothers.
