Twinsarethemostfrequentformofmultiplebirthinhumans,andidenticaltwinsoccuronlyone-fourthasfrequentlyasfraternaltwins.IntheU.S.onebirthinapproximately87isatwinbirth.Tripletsareabout87timesrarerthantwins,andquadrupletsabout87timesrarerthantriplets.Quintupletsoccurinabout1outof8millionpregnancies.Thesefiguresareforspontaneouslyoccurringpregnancies.
Twinstudies
Inthelate1970's,thebehavioralstudyoftwinsreceivedanewimpetuswiththediscoveryofseveralespeciallystrikingpairsofidenticaltwins—childrenseparatedbyfamilycircumstanceatbirthandraisedintotallydifferentenvironments.AresearchteamheadedbyThomasJ.Bouchard,Jr.,apsychologistattheUniversityofMinnesota,collectedcasehistoriesandgavelengthy,detailedquestionnairesto15suchsetsoftwins.Workingontheassumptionthatthepsychologicalfeaturessharedbyeachpairoftwinscouldbeattributedtoacommonheredity,Bouchardsuggestedthatdifferencesbetweenthemwouldbeattributabletodifferencesinupbringing.
OneofthemostdramaticcaseswasthatofJackYufeandOscarStohr,twinsseparatedbythedivorceoftheirparentsin1932,whiletheywerestillinfants.YufewasraisedinTrinidadasaJew,studiedHebrew,andlivedinIsraelforfiveyears;StohrwasraisedasaRomanCatholicinCzechoslovakia,underwentaNazi-dominatededucationduringtheGermanoccupation,andwasstronglyanti-Semitic.Notsurprisingly,manyaspectsoftheirpersonalitiesdiffersharply.Yufeisarelativelyflexibleindividual,generallyliberalinhispoliticalandsocialattitudes;Stohrisfairlyrigidandauthoritarian.Thereare,however,startlingandoftenbizarreparallels,asrevealedbythe15,000-itemquestionnaire.Bothmenlikeanddislikealmostthesamefoods;bothareweakinmathematics;bothselectedthesameshadeofgreenastheirfavoritecolor.
Othertwinsinthestudyalsoprovedtohaveinterestingsimilarities;thereweretwinswhonevermetandyetwhoeachhadthreechildrenwiththesamenames;twinswhomarriedmenwiththesamehaircolorandhairstyle;twinswhohadappendectomiesthesameyear;twinswholikedexactlythesamepiecesofmusicandthesametelevisionprograms.
Thedatahavenotbeencompletelyanalyzed,butitisevidentthatwhileupbringingisindeedamajorfactorineveryindividual'spersonalmakeup,thereareunexplored,extremelypowerfulhereditaryfactorsinvolved.
