Abstract:

Amachineisacombinationofmechanismsandothercomponentswhichtransforms,transmits,orutilizesenergy,force,ormotionforausefulpurpose.Examplesareengines,turbines,vehicles,hoists,printingpresses,washingmachines,andmoviecameras.Manyoftheprinciplesandmethodsofdesignthatapplytomachinesalsoapplytomanufacturedarticlesthatarenottruemachines,fromhubcapsandfilingcabinetstoinstrumentsandnuclearpressurevessels.Theterm"mechanical

design"isusedinabroadersensethan"machinedesign"toincludetheirdesign.Forsomeapparatus,thethermalandfluidaspectsthatdeterminetherequirementsofheat,flowpath,andvolumeareseparatelyconsidered.However,themotiorandstructuralaspectsandtheprovisionsforretentionandenclosureareconsiderationsinmechanicaldesign.Applicationsoccurinthefieldofmechanicalengineering,andinotherengineeringfieldsaswell,allofwhichrequiremechanicalevices,suchasswitches,cams,valves,vessels,andmixers.
