ThehighschoolpromisthefirstformalsocialeventformostAmericanteenagers.Ithasalsobeenarite(仪式,典礼)ofpassageforyoungAmericansfornearlyacentury.

Theword“prom”wasfirstusedinthe1890s,referringtoformaldancesinwhichtheguestsofapartywoulddisplay(展示)theirfashionsanddancingskillsduringtheevening’sgrandmarch.IntheUnitedStates,parentsandeducatorshavecometoregardthepromasanimportantlessoninsocialskills.Therefore,promshavebeenheldeveryyearinhighschoolsforstudentstolearnpropersocialbehavior.

Thefirsthighschoolpromswereheldinthe1920sinAmerica.Bythe1930s,promswerecommonacrossthecountry.FormanyolderAmericans,thepromwasamodest,homegrownaffairintheschoolgymnasium.Promgoerswerewelldressedbutnotfancilydressedupfortheoccasion:

boysworejacketsandtiesandgirlsworetheirSundaydresses.Couplesdancedtomusicprovidedbyalocalamateurbandorarecordplayer.Afterthe1960s,andespeciallysincethe1980s,thehighschoolprominmanyareashasbecomeaseriousexerciseinexcessive(过度的)consumption,withboysrentingexpensivetuxedos(晚礼服)andgirlswearingdesignergowns(女式礼服).Stretchlimousines(超长豪华轿车)werehiredtodrivethepromgoerstoexpensiverestaurantsordiscosforanallnightcelebration.

Whethersimpleorlavish(浪费的),promshavealwaysbeenmoreorlessfrighteningeventsforadolescentswhoworryaboutselfimageandfittinginwiththeirpeers.Promnightcanbeaterribleexperienceforsociallyawkwardteensorforthosewhodonotdatewithothers.Sincethe1990s,alternativepromshavebeenorganizedinsomeareastomeettheneedsofparticularstudents.Forexample,promsorganizedbyandforhomelessyouthwerereported.Therewerealso“couplefree”promstowhichallstudentsarewelcome.

我简直无法相信我的学校生活就要结束了。

毕业舞会来了也结束了,我也最终获得了高中毕业证书。

考试结束,这是一件好事。

我太兴奋了,简直无法理清思绪!

我打算做的第一件事就是度一个长假!

SomethingelseI’vegreatlyenjoyedisworkingasapeermediator,someonewhohelpsstudentstosettleproblemsthattheyhavewithotherstudents.Atthestartoftheschoolyear,weweregiventraininginhowtodothis,andit’sclearthatthiskindofworkcanreallyhelppeople.IthinkI’llcontinuetoworkasamediatorwhenIgotocollege.

DuringtheEastervacation,IwentonashortschoolskiingtriptotheRockyMountains.I’vebeenskiingquiteafewtimes,butneverwiththeschool,andsincetwogoodfriendscameonthetrip,wehadgreatfunracingeachotherdowntheskislopes.It’swellknownthatAmericansarecompetitive,andIdidenjoyitwheneverIwonourraces!
