ThehighschoolpromisthefirstformalsocialeventformostAmericanteenagers.Ithasalsobeenarite(仪式,典礼)ofpassageforyoungAmericansfornearlyacentury.
Theword“prom”wasfirstusedinthe1890s,referringtoformaldancesinwhichtheguestsofapartywoulddisplay(展示)theirfashionsanddancingskillsduringtheevening’sgrandmarch.IntheUnitedStates,parentsandeducatorshavecometoregardthepromasanimportantlessoninsocialskills.Therefore,promshavebeenheldeveryyearinhighschoolsforstudentstolearnpropersocialbehavior.
Thefirsthighschoolpromswereheldinthe1920sinAmerica.Bythe1930s,promswerecommonacrossthecountry.FormanyolderAmericans,thepromwasamodest,homegrownaffairintheschoolgymnasium.Promgoerswerewelldressedbutnotfancilydressedupfortheoccasion:
boysworejacketsandtiesandgirlsworetheirSundaydresses.Couplesdancedtomusicprovidedbyalocalamateurbandorarecordplayer.Afterthe1960s,andespeciallysincethe1980s,thehighschoolprominmanyareashasbecomeaseriousexerciseinexcessive(过度的)consumption,withboysrentingexpensivetuxedos(晚礼服)andgirlswearingdesignergowns(女式礼服).Stretchlimousines(超长豪华轿车)werehiredtodrivethepromgoerstoexpensiverestaurantsordiscosforanallnightcelebration.

DuringtheEastervacation,IwentonashortschoolskiingtriptotheRockyMountains.I’vebeenskiingquiteafewtimes,butneverwiththeschool,andsincetwogoodfriendscameonthetrip,wehadgreatfunracingeachotherdowntheskislopes.It’swellknownthatAmericansarecompetitive,andIdidenjoyitwheneverIwonourraces!
