ThehighschoolpromisthefirstformalsocialeventformostAmericanteenagers.Ithasalsobeenarite（仪式，典礼）ofpassageforyoungAmericansfornearlyacentury.

Theword“prom”wasfirstusedinthe1890s,referringtoformaldancesinwhichtheguestsofapartywoulddisplay（展示）theirfashionsanddancingskillsduringtheevening’sgrandmarch.IntheUnitedStates,parentsandeducatorshavecometoregardthepromasanimportantlessoninsocialskills.Therefore,promshavebeenheldeveryyearinhighschoolsforstudentstolearnpropersocialbehavior.

Thefirsthighschoolpromswereheldinthe1920sinAmerica.Bythe1930s,promswerecommonacrossthecountry.FormanyolderAmericans,thepromwasamodest,homegrownaffairintheschoolgymnasium.Promgoerswerewelldressedbutnotfancilydressedupfortheoccasion:

boysworejacketsandtiesandgirlsworetheirSundaydresses.Couplesdancedtomusicprovidedbyalocalamateurbandorarecordplayer.Afterthe1960s，andespeciallysincethe1980s,thehighschoolprominmanyareashasbecomeaseriousexerciseinexcessive（过度的）consumption,withboysrentingexpensivetuxedos（晚礼服）andgirlswearingdesignergowns（女式礼服）.Stretchlimousines（超长豪华轿车）werehiredtodrivethepromgoerstoexpensiverestaurantsordiscosforanallnightcelebration.
