In1983,MotherTeresasufferedfromaseriousheartattackwhileshewasinRome.However,sherecovered.But,inlate1989,shegotanattackagain.Herconditionwentworseandin1991,shesufferedfrompneumonia.Takingherhealthproblemsintoconsideration,MotherTeresadecidedtoresign(辞职).
AsecretvotewasconductedinwhichallthenunsvotedforthestayofMotherTeresaexceptherself.So,sheagreedtocontinueservingastheheadoftheMissionariesofCharity.Daybydayherhealthwasgettingworse.OnSeptember5th,1997,exactlytheninthdayafterher87thbirthday,thisgreatsouldepartedforheaven.
