  ThefairytaleofAladdinhasalwaysbeenmychildhoodfavorite.IwasmesmerizedbyhowAladdinusedhisthreemagicwishes.Asasmallgirl,IdreamedofhavingthemagicwishestogowhereverIwantedtogoandseewhateverIwantedtosee.Asyoucanprobablyguess,Ihaven’tfoundmygenieinthelampyet,however,Ihavefoundsomethingjustasexcitingandithasmademarvelouschangesinnotonlymylife,butthelivesofallhuman-beings.Itiscalledtechnology.

  IstillrememberhowmyfathertoldmeabouthischildhoodbackinthosedayswhenChinawasnotasopenanddevelopedasitisnow.Childrenwouldrunforkilometerstoschool,maketoyswithwoodbythemselves,andthebiggestdreamofachildwasholdingtwojarsofsugar,onewhite,theotherbrownineacharmandhavingthechoiceofeatingwhicheverhewanted.Justlookatwhatwehavenow.Magnificenttechnologicaladvancementhasopenedupawholenewworldtous.

  However,justasourlivesbecomemoreconvenient,problemsarisefromthisnewlifestyle.Weseemtobecagedinthemoderntechnology;wearethinkingalikeasaresultofusingthesamesearchengine,wearegettinglazyasmostofourworkcanbedonebymachines,andwearealienatingpeoplearoundusforwearemorecomfortabletalkingonphonesandtypinginfrontofacomputer.

  IfIwasgiventhechancetomakemymagicwishesnow,Iwouldwishwecouldgobackintimeandliveforthreedayswithoutadvancedtechnology.Iwonderwhatwewoulddointhosethreedays.HereiswhatIimagine:

  Onthefirstday,peoplewouldbefeelingsouncomfortablewiththenewsituationthattheywouldprobablybeconfusedandjustnotknowwhattodo.Theworldwouldbeinamessforthewholeday.

  Onthesecondday,aslifegoeson,peoplewouldhavetofindalternativewaystodealwiththeirdailyrituals:

studentswouldhavetogotolibrariesforinformationtheywantedinsteadofsearchingonGoogle;boyswouldhavetoexpresstheiraffectiontogirlsinpersoninsteadofsendinganannoyingtxtmessage;andtheyoungpeopleoftodaywouldhavethechancetoexperiencethechildhoodoftheirparents.Onthisparticularday,wecouldrecoverallwehadlostinthemodernworld.

  Thencomesthethirdday.Aftertheprevioustwodays,wewouldgraduallycometorealizethatweshouldhavepaidmoreattentiontoourstudiesandworkasweactuallyhavesomuchcreativityandpotentialwithinourselves.Wewouldalsorealizethatweshouldhavespentmoretimewithafriend,aparentorachildaswedolovethem,butwedon’treallyunderstandthemduetothelackofpersonalcommunication.Weshouldn’thavebeensodependentonmoderntechnologyasitwasn’tinventedtoconfineus,buttoinspireus.Thislastdaywouldbespentinsparksofnewideasandsweetmomentswithourlovedones.

  Maybesomewouldarguethatitisjustmyimagination,andthatmagicwouldneverworkinourworld.True,butmagiccanalwaysworkinourhearts,helpingusunderstandthatwe,insteadofthemachine,arethemastersoftheworld.Thekeyistotreasureourhumaninitiativeandconnections,toseetheworldwithourowneyes,exploretheunknownwithourmindsandtreatotherswithourhearts.JustlikeAladdindidn’tchoosetousemagictogainahappylife,wecanmakeourchoice,too.Andwhenwedo,wewilllive,asinthefairytales,happilyeverafter.Thankyou.

  HomemilkdeliveryhasalmostgoneextinctinChinanow,alsogonewithitarethemilkmen,whooncedeliveredbottledfreshmilkdoor-to-door.Ontheotherhand,mailman’sbusinessorthecourierservicehasthrivedasonlineshoppinggainspopularity.However,inretrospect,Ifindsomethinghasbeenlostinthistransition,somethingShakespearecalledas“themilkofhumankindness”.

  WhenIwasakid,milkwasn’tforsaleeverywhere.Forthefamilieswhoneedit,theydependedonthemilkmentotakeitfromthelocaldairyfarmstotheirhouses.Inourneighborhood,therewassuchamilkman,whosearrivalwasmuchanticipatedbythechildrenandalwaysbroughtuslaughterandjoy.Heknewthenameofeverykidandcouldeasilyseethroughourtricks.Ifwedidn’tbehave,hewouldsidewithourparentsandthreatentorobusofthenutritiousdrink.Theentireneighborhoodwasacquaintedwithhim;sawhimasamemberofthecommunityjustlikethemanyresidentsorstreetvendors.Therewasabondbetweenallofusforitwasnotonlythecommoditiesthatbeentransacted,butalsoasenseofcaringanddependability.Andthatsmallboxfixedontoourdoor,otherthanbeingadrop-offpointformilk;itwasacommunicationjunctionbetweenthepeopleaswetooktheinitiativetoreachouttoothers.

  Fastforwardtotoday,milkisubiquitouswithnodedicateddeliverysystem.Buttheconveniencelevelofourlivehasgoneupanotch.Almosteverythingisforsaleonline,whichsparesusallthetravellingandtalking.Withafewreadyclicks,shoppingisdone.Therestisleftforthosespeeddeliverycompanies.Usuallyit’sagrumpymailman,whoreachesusthroughcellphone,urgingeveryonetopickuptheirparcelsassoonaspossible.Andtheminutethereceiptissigned,werushbacktounpackwhilethecourierdashestothenextdestination.Thereisbarelyaconversationcarriedout,nordowefeeltheneedtotalktosuchastranger,whochangesfromtimetotimefrequently.Itseemsthatpeoplearealwaysinahurrynow,thoughwehavemoreconveniences,stillwerunshortoftimetostopandstare,tospeakandshare.

  Callmeanold-timer,butIthinkthepersonaltouchrepresentedbythemilkmaniswhathasbeenmissinginthemodernsociety.WilliamWordsworthoncewrotethat“Gettingandspending,welaywasteourpowers.”Moderntechnologymayhavemultipliedourpossessionsorgaveusmoreconveniences,butweruntheriskofreducingourvaluesifwelaywasteourpowerofinterpersonalrelationships.

  IdecidedtotakepartinanInternationalMarathoninmyhometownlastyear.Beinganambitiousperson,Ihopedtofinishitwithin5hours,accompaniedbymyfriendwithwhomIhadtrained.

  Thebigdayfinallyarrived.“Ready...set...bang”Andwewereoff.

  Atfirst,wekeptarapidpaceandrannonstop.Atthispace,wefinishedthefirst20kilometersin2hoursandIthoughtrunningamarathonwasapieceofcake.Thenmyrunningmatebegantoslowdown.Iurgedhimtokeeprunningatthesamepacebuthesaidno,hewantedtoconservehisenergy.IfeltIhadpartneredwiththewrongperson,therefore,Isprintedonandlefthimbehindinthedust.

  Afewkilometerslater,Ibegantounderstandhisstrategyasmypaceslowedtoajogthenawalk.AfterthatIwasincapableofmovinganotherstep.Iwashumiliatedasmoreandmorepeopleranpassedme.MorethanonceIthought“MaybeIshouldquit.”Istartedtodoubtmyabilitytofinishthisrace.

  Atthismoment,myrunningmatecaughtupwithmeandslappedmeontheback.“Followme,”heshouted.Hehadbalancedhismarathonpaceandwasencouragedmetodothesame.Fortherestofthisgruelingcontest,wewalked,jogged,ranafewmiles,andwalkedagain.Slowly,painfullybuthopefullythistime,weestablishedthemostsuitablepacewithinthenaturalflowofourphysicalcapabilities.

  EventuallyweaccomplishedourfirstMarathonof42kilometersin4andhalfhours.Iaskedmyself,whatdidthismarathonmeantome?

MyMarathonexperiencebecameaninfluentialmetaphorformylifeabouthowwemustlearntopaceourselvesineverything,bybeingintunewiththerhythmoflife.

  Likethetidethatebbsandflows,wemustlistentoadvicebutmakeourowndecisions.Liketheshowatdawnanddusk,wemustlearntobalanceprideandmodesty.Andfromthewaythewindcanbothshoutandwhisper,wemustlearnwhentobestrongandwhentobegentle,foreverythingmovesinitsownrhythmanditsownyinandyangelements.Itistheinteractionofthesecomplementaryextremesthatproducesharmony,asLaozisaid,extremesmeet.Sincethemarathon,thisnotionoftwooppositeforcesworkingtogetherhasbeenmyrunningpartner,sotospeak.Yinandyangexisteverywhere,constantlyinteracting,andneverexistinginanabsolutecondition.

  LadiesandGentlemen,lifeislikerunningamarathon,letusdiscover,defineanddevelopanaturalrhythmoflife,inordertoachievebothharmonyandsuccess.
