STOMPwasformedbyBritishmusiciansLukeCresswellandSteveMcNicholas.Theymetintheearly1980swhentheywerebothworkingasbuskers,theBritishtermforstreetperformers.CresswellandMcNicholaswerepartofabuskinggroupcalledPookiesnackenburgerthatbecameverypopularthroughoutBritain.

Cresswellwasadrummer（鼓手）forthegroup.Becausetheyperformedonthestreet,hecouldnotsetupatraditionaldrumset.Instead,heworeonedrumthathungaroundhisshoulders.Tobeabletomakedifferentsounds,Cresswellbeganbeatingoneverydayobjectsthathecouldfindduringperformances.ThiscreativedrummingledtotheideaforSTOMP.

STOMPmadeitsfirstpublicappearanceatLondon’sBloomsburyTheatrein1991.Theperformersusedone-of-a-kindinstruments,suchasemptywaterbottles,basketballs,andmatchboxestocreatemusic.WearingoverallsandT-shirts,theydancedaroundonastagemadetolooklikeaclosedwarehouse（仓库）.STOMPwasagreatsuccess,winningmanytheaterawardsanddrawinghugecrowds（人群）.
