（一）

 Exercise

　　Itwasmostlyhewhotalkedandheseemedafraidtostopforfearshe''daskhimtoleaveherbyherself.

　　Anexampleofaverbalsubtestwouldbevocabulary,whereasanexampleofaperformancesubtestwouldbepicturearrangement,thelatterrequiringanexamineetoarrangeasetofpicturesintoasequencesothattheytellacomprehensiblestory.

　　Abodyatrestwillremainatrestandabodyinmotionremaininmotionataconstantspeedinastraightline,unlessacteduponbyanexternalforce.

这是一个由and连接的并列复合句。

And前面的句子是强调句，强调的成分是he.It仅位先行代词，没有意义。

Mostly用作副词，意为“多半”。

And连接两个句子，构成并列句。

Unless是连词，连接下一个子句，做前面两个主句的状语从句。

Unless后面省略了itis.Atrest和inmotion是两个介词短语，分别作body的定语，意思为“处于静止状态”和“处于运动状态中”

其前后在语法上为相同的成分。

此处为两个结构相同的介词短语onthespecificskills……和onthebasicbackgroundskills……。

培训工人的有限投资应重点地集中使用于完成下一个工作所必需的特殊技能的培训上，而不是用在能让他们吸收新技术的基本技能的培训上。

　　PS:

这是书上的译文，但有同学提出异议，那豆豆在仔细看了一下，觉得同学说的是很有道理的，此处没有"应当"的含义。

豆豆也觉得翻成：

培训工人的有限投资更多地被狭隘的集中使用于完成下一个工作所必需的特殊技能的培训上，而不是用在能让他们吸收新技术的基本技能的培训上。

仅为个人观点，供大家参考。

　　要点：

not……or……结构相当于neither……nor……结构

　　参考译文：

人们只能猜测，如果他听到了很多有关的情况，这只能坚定他的决心：

不能让他和他新娘成为展品而丢人现眼——活着的时候不可以，死了也不行。

动词“avoid”后面应接动名词作宾语。

“whichwouldmakepeoplefeeluneasy”作“thing”的定语。

在破折号后面“unlessbydoingsoyoufeelsomegoodmightcomeofit”作让步状语从句。

“good”是名词，作“feel”的宾语从句“somegoodmightcomeofit”中的主语。

“it”指“bydoingso”所包含的前面提到的为避免重复而未具体说出的内容。

这两个状语从句在实践上存在着先后顺序，在结构上是一个对偶句，而且第二个状语从句得主语省略，即whenwerememberwhatitwasandthensuddenly（we）realizethatitisnomore

　　要点：

此句是由;号链接在一起的两个独立的句子，是一个并列的结构。

第二个分句的主语this指的应该是前面的整个句子的含义，否则会出现理解上的偏差。

Existingparadigms是介词beyond的宾语，而governingresearch是paradigms的定语。

　　参考译文：

可见，科学包括的不仅是仔细观察，而且还包括乐于去创新，这就必须要超越那些支配着某一特定学科的现有的研究规范。
