EachyearinthefirstweekofMay,Ottawa,Canada’scapitalcity,becomesaflowerocean.Morethanthreemilliontulipscovertheroads,onbothsidesoftheOttawaRiver.ThesebeautifulflowersannouncethearrivalofspringandtheofficialopeningoftheCanadianTulipFestival,whichistheworld’slargesttulipfestival.Duringthisperiod,Canada’scapitalwillbealivewithnotonlybloomingtulips,butmusic,parades,fireworks,andpeoplefromaroundtheworld.
WhydoesOttawacelebratetheTulipFestivalwithsuchenthusiasm?
Thetraditionbeganabout70yearsago.TheGermanarmyhadinvadedtheNetherlandsinMay,1940,andtheroyalfamilywasforcedtorunawayfromtheircountry.TheywentfirsttoLondonthenontoOttawawheretheyweregivenGovernmentHouseasashelter.
In1943,PrincessJuliana’sdaughter,PrincessMargrietwasbornattheOttawaCivicHospital.AndtheroomwherePrincessMargrietwasbornwasannouncedtobeanofficialgifttotheNetherlandsbytheCanadiangovernmentsothatshewouldbeborninherowncountry’splace.AccordingtotheNetherlands’slaw,anyonewhowasn’tbornintheNetherlandswilllosetheircitizenship;thereforeMargrietwouldhavenorighttobetheprincessoftheNetherlands.
Aftertheroyalfamilyreturnedtotheirhomelandin1945,PrincessJulianagave100,000tulipbulbstotheCanadiangovernmentandthecitizensofOttawaasareward.Thisstartedatraditionandeveryyeareversince,another100,000bulbsweresenttoOttawaandplantedallaroundthecity.Overthenextdecade,theCanadianTulipFestivalbecamebiggerandbiggerandtouristsstartedmakingOttawatheirdestinationinearlyMay.
Nowthisfestivalisnotonlyaloveofflowers,butalsoasymboloffriendshipbetweenthetwocountries.Ifyouhaven’tbeentoOttawainearlyMay,don’tmissit.
