What’smore,hungryanimalsarefindingplentytoeatinourgardensandintheleftoverswethrowaway.

Onethingcrucialtotheincreasingnumberof“urbananimals”istheirabilitytoadapt.Thereisevidence(10)thaturbanracoonsaremoreintelligentthantheirwildcousins,astheyfrequentlyhavetofigureoutdifficultproblemssuchashowtoopenrubbishbinsandothercontainers(11)whichtheywouldnotfindinthewild.Someanimalshaveevenchangedtheirlivinghabitstofitinwiththeirnewhomes.(12)Althoughnaturallyactiveatnight,urbanfoxescomeoutindaylightiftherewardisgoodenough.Theircitylocationalsomeansthattheyaregettingatasteforthemulticulturalcuisineonofferfromthegarbage,suchashamburgers,lambkebabsandevengarlicbread!

Forthoseanimalsthatdon’tadapt,thecitycanbeadangerousorevendeadlyplace.Unabletodistinguishbetweenblueskyandglass,birdscrashintowindowsatspeedsofabout30milesperhour.Recentstudiesestimatethatbetween400millionand1billionbirdsdiefromwindowimpactseachyearintheUSalone.Shockingly,thesedeathsamounttoaroundtenpercentofthetotalUSbirdpopulation.Somespeciesaremoreaffectedthanothers.Onetheorybehindthisis(13)thatthesebirdshaveyettochangetheirmigratoryroutes(14)thattakethemthroughcitieswithhigh-risebuildings.
