AstronomersusedNASA’sChandraandtheEuropeanSpaceAgency’sXMM-NewtonX-rayobservatoriestocapturetheevent.Similareventsareestimatedtooccurjustonceevery10,000yearsinatypicalgalaxy.

AstronomershaveseenothersimilarX-rayblastsbefore,butneverwereabletopinpointthematthecenterofagalaxy,whereblackholeslurk.ThenewobservationsalsorevealedthecharacteristicX-raysignatureexpectedofthesurroundingsofablackhole.

Shawandhisteamhadassumedthattherewouldbesomesocialorpsychologicalbenefitforthechildrenwhohadtheirteethstraightenedin1981.Butwhentheygavethemabatteryofstandardpsychologicalquestions20yearslatertoassesstheirwell-being,theresearchersfoundnothingthatseemstohavederivedfromhavingorthodontictreatment.
