Wecouldn'tgooutsideatallonthatcold,rainyafternoon.Therainwaspouringdown,andthewindwasblowinghard.Ididn'tcare,Iwashappytostayindoors.Tryingtotakelongwalksinthewinterwasterrible!

Itwassupposedtobehealthyforourbodies,butIhatedcominghomeinthedarkwithmyfeetandhandsascoldasice.AndIwasalwaysunhappybecauseBessie,oneoftheservants,wasalwaysscoldingme.IhadalwaysknownthatIwasdifferentfrommycousins,John,Eliza,andGeorgianaReed.TheywereprettierandtallerthanI,andeveryonelovedthem.

Johndidnotlovehismotherorhissisters,andhehatedme.Hewasalwayscrueltome.Sometimeshehitme,andsometimeshejustthreatenedme.ButIwasalwaysafraidwhenhewasnear.Ididnotknowhowtomakehimtreatmewell.Theservantsdidnotwanttomakehimangry,sotheydidwhateverhewanted.Mrs.Reed,hismother,lovedhimtoomuchandthoughtheneverdidanythingwrong.
