ThetermBeatGenerationwasfirstusedbyKerouacinthelate1940s.Thewordbeathadvariousconnotationsforthewriters,includingdespairoverthebeatenstateoftheindividualinmasssocietyandbeliefinthebeatitude,orblessedness,ofthenaturalworldandintherestorativepowersofthebeatofjazzmusicandpoetry.Beatwritinggenerallycalledforarenunciationofmaterialgoodsandacquisitivenessinfavorofarediscoveryoftheerotic,artistic,andspiritualselfthroughtheuseofdrugs,casualsex,music,andthemysticismofZen禅宗Buddhism.
