TheSadYoungMenandtheLostGeneration:

refertothesamegroupofpeople.ThenamewasfirstcreatedandusedbyF.ScottFitzgeraldinhisbookAlltheSadYoungMenandsecondbyGertrudeStein.ThesenameswereappliedtothedisillusionedintellectualsandaesthetesoftheyearsfollowingtheWWI,whorebelledagainstformeridealsandvalues,butcouldreplacethemonlybydespairoracynicalhedonism享乐主义.

LostGeneration:

groupofexpatriate移居国外AmericanwritersresidingprimarilyinParisduringthe1920sand1930s.Thegroupneverformedacohesiveliterarymovement,butitconsistedofmanyinfluentialAmericanwriters,includingErnestHemingway,F.ScottFitzgerald,WilliamCarlosWilliams,ThorntonWilder,ArchibaldMacLeish,andHartCrane.ThegroupwasgivenitsnamebytheAmericanwriterGertrudeStein,who,inaconversationwithHemingway,usedanexpressionshehadheardfromagaragemanager,unegénerationperdue(“alostgeneration”),torefertoexpatriateAmericansbitterabouttheirWorldWarI(1914-1918)experiencesanddisillusionedwithAmericansociety.Hemingwaylaterusedthephraseasanepigraph引语forhisnovelTheSunAlsoRises(1926).

BeatGeneration:

groupofAmericanwritersofthe1950swhosewritingexpressedprofounddissatisfactionwithcontemporaryAmericansocietyandendorsedanalternativesetofvalues.Thetermsometimesisusedtorefertothosewhoembracedtheideasofthesewriters.

ThetermBeatGenerationwasfirstusedbyKerouacinthelate1940s.Thewordbeathadvariousconnotationsforthewriters,includingdespairoverthebeatenstateoftheindividualinmasssocietyandbeliefinthebeatitude,orblessedness,ofthenaturalworldandintherestorativepowersofthebeatofjazzmusicandpoetry.Beatwritinggenerallycalledforarenunciationofmaterialgoodsandacquisitivenessinfavorofarediscoveryoftheerotic,artistic,andspiritualselfthroughtheuseofdrugs,casualsex,music,andthemysticismofZen禅宗Buddhism.

ThisisapieceofexpositorywritingbytwoAmericanwritersexplainingacertainperiodinAmericanliteraryandsocialhistory.Itfocusesesp.ontheattitudesandrevoltoftheyoungpeoplewhoreturnedfromWWI,disappointedanddisillusioned.Inthisrevolttheyoungintellectuals,writersandartists,stoodinthevanandwasthemostvocalgroup.Manyoftheseintellectualslivedabroad,esp.inParis,asexpatriates,butmostofthemlaterreturnedtotheU.S.voluntarily.Theseintellectualswerecalled“SadYoungMen”or“thelostgeneration”,becausetheywerecriticalandrebellious.However,theywereneverlostbecausetheywerealsoverycreativeandproductiveandasthisessaysays:

“gavethenationtheliveliest,freshest,moststimulatingwritinginitsliteraryexperience”.
