InresponsetothespreadofEnglishandtheincreasedmulti-languagetrendsarisingfromimmigration,manycountrieshaveintroducedlanguagelawsinthelastdecade.Insome,theuseoflanguagesotherthanthenationallanguageisbannedinpublicspacessuchasadvertisingposters.Oneofthefirstsuchlegalprovisions(规定)wasthe1994"Toubonlaw"inFrance,andtheideahasbeencopiedinmanycountriessincethen.Sucheffortstogovernlanguageuseareoftenconsideredasfutilebylanguageexperts,whoarewellawareofthedifficultyincontrollingfashionsinspeechandknowfromresearchthatlanguageswitchingamongbilingualsisanaturalprocess.
