(Applause.)Everybody,giveitupforNancyforthatgreatintroduction.(Applause.)ItisgoodtobebackinNewOrleans.ThisiswhatpassesforwinterhereinNewOrleans,huh?

(Laughter.)Folksgotalltheircoatsonandallthat.Comeon.YouneedtogotoChicagotoknowwhatit’sliketobecold.

  Itisgreattobehere.Itisespeciallyhappyformystaff.TheylovecomingtoNewOrleans.ButwedidscheduletheeventearlybecauseIfigurethere’salimittohowmuchtroubletheycouldgetinto.(Laughter.)Theycan’tgetovertoBourbonStreetfastenoughifwedidadaytimeevent.AndIknowthatthereareprobablyacoupleofmystaffthatareLSUfans.Iwouldn’tmindstayingforthegametomorrownight.Iknowwe’vegotthepresidenthere--IjustsawhimaminuteagoandIwishedhimallthebest.

  Ialsowanttoacknowledgeacoupleofotherpeoplewhoarehere.You’vegotyourGovernor--BobbyJindalishere.(Applause.)We’vegottheSecretaryofTransportationAnthonyFoxx,whoishere.(Applause.)WehaveCedricRichmond,youroutstandingCongressman.(Applause.)CedricthenbroughtdownawholebunchofhiscolleaguesfromtheCongressionalBlackCaucusforsomeimportantworkthatthey’redoing--notthatthey’regoingtoenjoythemselvesatallwhilethey’rehere.(Laughter.)Butwearethrilledtoseethemallhere.

  YouhaveoneofthebestmayorsinthecountryinMitchLandrieu.(Applause.)AndIjustflewdownwithyourSenator,who,bycoincidence,hasthesamename--MaryLandrieu.(Applause.)She’stravelingaroundthestatetodayanddoingunbelievableworkonbehalfofthepeopleofLouisiana.AndIjustwanttosaynobodyisatougheradvocateonbehalfoftheworkingpeopleofLouisianathanMaryLandrieu.Sowe’revery,veryproudoftheworkthatshedoes.(Applause.)

  Finally,IwanttothankMr.GaryLaGrange,KeithPalmisano,andChrisHammond.Theyshowedmearoundtheport.(Applause.)Andthisisoneofthe--bytheway,anybodywho’sgotaseat,feelfree.Inoticedthatafewfolksarestandingup.Ifyoudon’thaveaseatthenkeeponstanding.Idon’twantyouhurtingyourself.

  Thisisoneofthebusiestportcomplexesintheentireworld.Youmovemillionsoftonsofsteelandchemicalsandfuelandfoodeverysingleyear.Ijustfoundoutyoualsohandlealotofthecountry’scoffee,whichmeansyou’reresponsibleforkeepingtheWhiteHouseawakeatalltimes.(Applause.)Gotsomecoffeefolkshere.

  And,insomanyways,thisportisrepresentativeofwhatportsallaroundthecountrydo:

Theyhelptokeepoureconomygoing--movingproducts,movingpeople,makingsurethatbusinessesareworking.You’vegotcornandwheatthat’scomingdownfrommyhomestateofIllinoisdowntheriver,endinguphere,andthengoingallaroundtheworld.Andit’spartofthereasonwhywe’vebeenabletoincreaseexportssorapidly,isbecausewe’vegotsomeofthebestnaturalresourcesandwaterwaysandfacilitiesintheworld.

  Now,growingoureconomy,creatingnewjobs,helpingmiddle-classfamiliesregainasenseofstabilityandsecuritysotheycanfindgoodjobsandmakesurethattheirkidsaredoingevenbetterthantheydid--that’salwaysbeenwhatAmericaisabout,butfortoomanypeople,thatsensethatyoucanmakeithereifyoutry,thatsensehasbeenslippingaway.Andmydrivingfocushasbeentorestorethatsenseofsecurity,anditshouldbeWashington’sfocus,regardlessofparty.That’swhateverybodyinWashingtonshouldbethinkingabouteveryday.

  Sotoday,Iwanttojustofferacoupleofideasaboutwhatwecoulddorightnowtogetherthatwouldhelpoureconomy--rightnow.Now,thegoodnewsis,overthepast44monthsourbusinesseshavecreated7.8millionnewjobs.SinceItookoffice,we’vecutthedeficitsinhalf.(Applause.)That’sright.Bytheway,youwouldn’tknowthissometimeslisteningtofolksonTV,butthedeficitsaregoingdown,they’renotgoingup.They’vebeencutinhalf.(Applause.)Andtheykeepongoingdown.

  Overthepastthreeyears,healthcarecostshaverisenattheslowestpaceonrecord.Exportsareup.Thehousingmarketisup.TheAmericanautoindustryisroaringback.Sowe’vegotalotofgoodthingstobuildon,butwe’vegotalotmoreworktodo.Andwhatweshouldstartdoing,thefirstthingweshoulddoisstopdoingthingsthatundermineourbusinessesandoureconomyoverthepastfewyears--thisconstantcycleofmanufacturedcrisesandself-inflictedwoundsthathavebeencomingoutofWashington.

  Forexample,welearnedyesterdaythatoverthesummer,oureconomygrewatitsfastestpaceinayear.That’sthegoodnews.Thebadnewsisthattheverydaythattheeconomicquarterended,somefolksinWashingtondecidedtoshutdownthegovernmentandthreatenedtodefaultonAmerica’sobligationsforthefirsttimeinmorethan200years.Andit’slikethegearsofoureconomy,everytimetheyarejustabouttotakeoff,suddenlysomebodytapsthebrakesandsays,“Notsofast.”

  THEPRESIDENT:

Now,ourbusinessesareresilient.We’vegotgreatworkers.Andso,asaconsequence,weaddedabout200,000newjobslastmonth.Butthere’snoquestionthattheshutdownharmedourjobsmarket.Theunemploymentratestilltickedup.Andwedon’tyetknowallthedataforthisfinalquarteroftheyear,butitcouldbedownbecauseofwhathappenedinWashington.Now,thatmakesnosense.Theseself-inflictedwoundsdon’thavetohappen.Theyshouldnothappenagain.

  Weshouldnotbeinjuringourselveseveryfewmonths--weshouldbeinvestinginourselves.Weshouldbebuilding,nottearingthingsdown.Ratherthanrefightingthesameoldbattlesagainandagainandagain,weshouldbefightingtomakesureeverybodywhoworkshardinAmericaandhardrighthereinNewOrleans,thattheyhaveachancetogetahead.That’swhatweshouldbefocusedon.(Applause.)

  WhichbringsmetooneofthereasonsI’mhereatthisport.Oneofthethingsweshouldbefocusedonishelpingmorebusinessessellmoreproductstotherestoftheworld.Andtheonlywaythoseproductsgetoutisthroughfacilitieslikethis.Rightnow,exportsareoneofthebrightestspotsinoureconomy.ThanksinparttonewtradedealsthatwesignedwithcountrieslikePanamaandColombiaandSouthKorea,wenowexportmoregoodsandservicesthaneverbefore.AndthatmeansjobsrighthereintheUnitedStatesofAmerica.

  Lastyear,every$1billioninexportssupportsnearly5,000jobs,includingjobsrighthereatthisport.Sowe’reworkingonnewtradedealsthatwillmeanmorejobsforourworkers,andmorebusinessforportslikethisone.

  And,bytheway,whenItravelaroundtheworld,I’moutthereselling.I’llgoanywhereintheworldtomakesurethatthoseproductsstampedwiththosewords,“MadeinAmerica,”thatwecanopenupthosemarketsandsellthemanywhere.(Applause.)

  SohelpingAmericanbusinessesgrow;creatingmorejobs--thesearenotDemocraticorRepublicanpriorities.Theyareprioritiesthateverybody,regardlessofparty,shouldbeabletogetbehind.Andthat’swhy,inadditiontoworkingwithCongresstogrowourexports,I’veputforwardadditionalideaswhereIbelieveDemocratsandRepublicanscanjointogethertomakeprogressrightnow.

  Numberone,CongressneedstopassafarmbillthathelpsruralcommunitiesgrowandprotectsvulnerableAmericans.Fordecades,Congressfoundawaytocompromiseandpassfarmbillswithoutfuss.Forsomereason,nowCongresscan’tevengetthatdone.Now,thisisnotsomethingthatjustbenefitsfarmers.PortslikethisonedependonalltheproductscomingdowntheMississippi.Solet’sdotherightthing,passafarmbill.Wecanstartsellingmoreproducts.That’smorebusinessforthisport.Andthatmeansmorejobsrighthere.(Applause.)

  Numbertwo,weshouldfixourbrokenimmigrationsystem.(Applause.)Thiswouldbegoodforournationalsecurity,butitwouldalsobegoodforoureconomicsecurity.Overthenexttwodecades,itwouldgrowoureconomyby$1.4trillion.Itwouldshrinkourdeficitsbynearlyatrilliondollars.Thisshouldnotbeapartisanissue.PresidentBushproposedthebroadoutlinesofcommon-senseimmigrationreformalmostadecadeago.WhenIwasintheSenate,Ijoined23ofmyRepublicancolleaguestobackthosereforms.Thisyear,theSenatehasalreadypassedabillwithbroadbipartisansupport.

  Soallwe’redoingnowiswaitingfortheHousetoact.Idon’tknowwhattheholdupis.Butifthere’sagoodreasonnottodoit,Ihaven’theardit.There’snoreasonbothpartiescan’tcometogetherandgetthisdonethisyear.Getitdonethisyear.(Applause.)

  Numberthree,DemocratsandRepublicansshouldworktogetheronaresponsiblebudgetthatsetsAmericaonastrongercourseforthefuture.Weshouldn’tgetcaughtupinthesameoldfights.Andweshouldn’tjustcutthingsjustforthesakeofcuttingthings.Remember,Iwanttoremindyou--what’shappeninginthedeficits?

They’regoingdown.They’reshrinking.They’refallingfasterthantheyhavein60years.

  SowhatwehavetodonowisdowhatAmericahasalwaysdone:

Makesomewiseinvestmentsinourpeopleandinourcountrythatwillhelpusgrowoverthelongterm.Weshouldclosewastefultaxloopholesthatdon’thelpourjobs,don’tgrowoureconomy,andtheninvestthatmoneyinthingsthatactuallydocreatejobsandgrowoureconomy.Andoneofthosethingsisbuildingnewroadsandbridgesandschoolsandports.Thatcreatesjobs.(Applause.)Itputspeopletoworkduringtheconstructionphase.Andthenitcreatesaninfrastructureforoureconomytosucceedmovingforward.

  Educatingourkids,trainingourworkerssothey’repreparedfortheglobaleconomy--thathelpsusgrow.Weshouldbeinvestinginthat.AndMayorLandrieuhasbeendoingagreatjobinimproving
