Backgroundinformation
1.AbrahamLincoln
AbrahamLincoln(1809-1865)wasthe16thpresidentoftheUnitedStatesfrom1861to1865.HeledthecountrythroughtheAmericanCivilWar,preservingtheUnion,endingslavery,andpromotingeconomicandfinancialdevelopment.
BroughtupinapoorfamilyonafarminKentucky,Lincolnwasmostlyself-educated.Thoughwithoutaformaleducation,hisspeakingskillsandpracticeindebateswonhimnationalrecognition.HewaselectedtheUSpresidentin1860.
TheCivilWarbeganinApril1861whentheSouthernstatesdeclaredtowithdrawfromtheUnion.In1863,LincolnissuedtheEmancipationProclamation(《解放宣言》)andthe13thAmendmenttotheUSConstitutionthatdeclaredallslavesfreemen.In1864,Lincolnwasre-electedpresidentforasecondterm.
OnApril14,1865atFord’sTheatreinWashington,D.C.,LincolnwasshotandkilledbyJohnWilkesBooth,whowasastageactorandstronglyopposedtheabolitionofslaveryintheUnitedStates.
AmongAmericanheroes,Lincolncontinuestohaveauniqueappealforhisfellowcountrymenandalsoforpeopleofotherlands.LincolnhasbeenconsistentlyregardedasoneofthegreatestUSpresidents.TheLincolnMemorialinWashington,D.C.,wasdedicatedtohimonMay30,1922.
