长短成语

LongandShortIdioms长短成语

英语的"长短成语"容易理解。

但含有cross和line的成语不容易理解。

有时Cross是基督教中的"十字架"；有时比喻"沉重的负担"；有时表示"生气"。

"对"和"错"可用"勾"或"叉"两个符号来表示，分别读做tick和cross.Crossedinlove"在爱情上被打了叉"说的是"失恋"或"被人蹬了"。

英语的line至少有20多种不同的解释。

除本单元成语以外，跟line有关联的成语还有Stepoutofline（越轨，不按规定或要求办事），例句：

Ifyoustepoutoflineagain,youwillbesacked（再不按规定办事，就炒你的鱿鱼）。

成语Readbetweenthelines中的lines是两行字的"行"，不是坐在铁路线上的两条铁轨（railwaylines）之间读书。

第5条成语Inthelongrun中的run是名词，指"奔跑的路程"。

本单元的英语成语跟"长"、"短"、"交叉"和"线条"等有关。

关键词包括：

1.Alongwayout字面意思：

离的很远。

[解释]Quiteinaccurate.

（答案）不正确。

[例句]Iamsorrytosaythatyouranswerwasalongwayout.

2.Byalongchalk字面意思：

一支长粉笔。

[解释]Byagreatamount;verymuch.

在很大程度上。

表示数量大、程度深、距离远；非常。

变体：

Byalongshot（远距离射击-相差甚远）不顾一切，无论如何

。

说明：

这两条成语常用于否定句。

Byalongchalk指的是用一根很长的粉笔不间断地画出的线条长度。

[例句]Shehasnotfinishedherthesisbyalongchalk.

3.Cutalongstoryshort字面意思：

把长故事剪短。

[解释]Saywithlesswordsinordertosavetime.

为省时间而长话短说。

简而言之。

[例句]LiMingmetthisAmericangirllastyearinShanghai…well,tocutalongstoryshort,heisanAmericancitizennow.

4.Havealonghead字面意思：

脑袋长。

[解释]Besensible,shrewd.

精明、机灵。

[例句]Hehasalonghead,andIthinkhecoulddowellinbusiness.

5.Inthelongrun字面意思：

在长期奔跑中。

[解释]Overalongperiodoftime;ultimately.

长期；长远来看；最终。

说明：

与inthelongrun意思相反的成语是intheshortrun（就眼前来看）。

[例句]Thecompanyislosingmoneyatthemoment,butprofitswillbehighinthelongrun.

6.Thelongandshortofsomething字面意思：

事情的长短。

[解释]Tosumupthemostimportantpointofanargumentorstory.

归纳要点；简要地说；归纳起来说。

[例句]It'sacomplicatedstory,butthelongandshortofitisthathewasarrested.

7.Takealongview字面意思：

看远处的景色。

[解释]Thinkaboutwhatwillhappeninthefutureaswellaswhatishappeningnow.

既考虑现在也考虑将来；长远考虑。

变体：

Takethelongview.

8.Ashortcut字面意思：

短切口。

穿过大脑。

（想法）短暂出现在脑海里；突然想到。

变体：

Passthroughsomeone'smind.说明：

Cometomind的字面意思是"进入脑海"，意思是"想到"，它不含"短暂"意思。
