30、 tocheck the level of alpha fetoprotein (甲胎蛋白),which normally remains at very low levelin the blood but increases significantly in many liver cancer patients. But the method isineffective for 40 percent of those who have liver cancer, and 20 percent of patients with noliver cancer are diagnosed as h
31、aving the disease because rising alpha fetoprotein levels canalso be caused by factors such as pregnancy and so on, Xu said.But using the new method, about 85 percent of cancer patients can be diagnosed andonly about 7 percent of patients are misdiagnosed, he said. The new method is moreaccurate and
32、 much simpler and does not require other tests, Xu said. The center hasdeveloped tests for liver cancer based on the research, and they will be used on people witha high risk of the disease at Sun Yat-sen Universitys Cancer Hospital, he said. And thetests are expected to be widely available for clinical use by the end of the year, he said.
