4、s which was developed by MichaelHalliday. As one of the three meta functions, interpersonal function principally refers to social position, identity, attitude, intention, background and the deduction of the speaker as well as the relation between the speaker and the listener. Interpersonal meta func
5、tion mainly consists of three core elements-person, mood and modality. With the good example of Jane Austens distinct novel Pride and Prejudice, this paper intends to give a vivid and detailed illustration of the interpersonal function from the viewpoint of systemic-functional linguistics. It starts
6、 with the introduction of the novel and the author, and then continues with the definition of systemic-functional linguistics, of which, the three functions are subsequently introduced, especially the interpersonal function. Based on all these theoretical analysis, the detail example is cited from t

IntroductionJane Austen is one of the most distinct female writers in the worl
9、d. Even till today, many readers all across the world, in spite of different cultural and language background, have been attracted by her remarkable works. All in her life, Jane Austen had completed more than one novel, of which Pride and Prejudice is the most impressive to all readers. Although it
10、is true that all literature works or novels in the world are somehow influenced by certain specific social background, the inspiration from the authors family and experience is also indispensable. From this point of view, study and analysis about her family and education helps us to obtain more accu
11、rate and complete understanding of Austens thoughts and her works.A. Jane Austens Family Background and Her EducationJane Austen, born in 1775, Hampshire, UK was a British litterateur in the 19th century. She is one of the female litterateurs who made great contribution to the worlds literature hist
12、ory. Her literary works Pride and Prejudice is famous for the keen observation and humorous description.Jane Austen was born in a decent family of eight children. Her father George Austen was priest and two brothers were also clergies. Jane Austens mother was not only pretty but also smart, good at
13、poems & writings and had the sense of humor. Austen lived her entire life as part of a close-knit family located on the lower fringes of the English landed gentry. Jane had a closely united family with passionate and active conservation between each member and so she got happiness, responsibility an
14、d wisdom from the intimate relation with her family. All this provided a good environment for her initial literary works (Jiang Xiaonan, 2011). As her brothers got married and started their own career, Jane Austen extended her social network gradually, and as a result, she obtained a more broad view
15、 and profound perception. In addition to her family influence, education and reading also helps to shape her mind and perspective.Education for girls during 1780s was constrained in many aspects. At that time, there were generally two choices for girls, to have regular school education or governess
16、or to be educated by mother. When she was eight years old, Jane was sent to Oxford together with her elder sister, Cassandra, to be educated. Both of the sisters caught typhus and Jane nearly died. After that, Jane Austen was educated at home until in 1785 she went to boarding school with Cassandra.
17、 In December 1786, Jane and Cassandra had to return home because the family could not afford to send both of the sisters to school. Since then, Austen was educated by reading and guided by her father & brothers. Austens family lived their life in an open, amused, easy intellectual atmosphere. Her fa
18、mily has the greatest influence to Janes life. Austens reading and writing experience has close relation with both her sister and five brothers. Her eldest brother, James Austen once studied in St Johns College, Oxford and was the initiator and sponsor of a newspaper, in which most articles were wri
19、tten by James. He had extensive reading of English literary works and developed a very high level of literary taste and appreciation (Liang Xiaolong, 2012). James also likes writing and was good at poem & prose. His literary cultivation has the direct influence to his sister, Janes interest and tast
20、e in literature. Another brother of Jane, Henry Thomas is also closely related with Janes great accomplishment in terms of writing and publication. Of all the brothers, Jane liked Henry the most, who had given extensive influence to her whole life. Most of Janes literary works were published with th
21、e help from his nice brother, Henry. Janes second elder brother, Edward Austen also had a close relation with Jane all through her life time. Edward had a good sense of humor and was active and energetic. He was adopted by his uncle and owned a manor Kent County & a large house in Hampshire, so Edwa
22、rd had a rather decent income every year. Although Edward left his brothers and sisters when he was young but he lived with them later in their life. He played a very important role to the ladies life of the family. Before the father George Austen died, the family lived a fairly well-off life even t
23、hough they were not very rich. However, life became quite difficult for Jane Austen, her sister and mother after her father died. Luckily, Edward gave a great 100 pounds to his sisters and mother to support their life. Jane her sister and mother also got help from James Austen and Henry Austen every
24、 year (Yang Yang, 2010). With such special experience, Jane Austen developed a brand-new understanding and perception of money, which is also reflected in her literary works. B. Jane Austens WorkAusten is one of the most widely read writers in English literature for her works of romantic fiction. As
25、 an outstanding literary giant, Jane Austen was renowned as “the most perfect female artist”, the most popular writer in the United Kingdom and even was marked to have the same high literary position as Shakespeare. During her life time, Jane Austen wrote abundant novels and literary works and many
26、of them are still constantly popular till today. “Lady Susan” is a short fiction wrote in 1794, after which, Austen started to create full-length novel. Among her well-known novels are Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. All of these nov
27、els reflected the critique about the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century realism. II. Literature ReviewSystem-functional linguistics was developed by the famous British linguist MichaelHalliday. The concept proposed by Halliday
28、integrates the philosophy of European anthropology and linguistics. It attaches importance to the social use of language and also stresses the function of language. Hallidays substantial perception of language and the importance attached to lingual system, function and discourse have made a signific
29、ant and valuable contribution to the research of lingual theory as well as related application. Since MichaelHalliday established System-functional linguistics, many linguists all across the world conducted lots of research about the theory. Thus, a variety version of definition and explanation of t

Thus functions are considered to have left their mark on the struc
32、ture and form of language to all extents, which are assumed to be achieved viameta functions. Such term meta function used here refers particularly to the systemic functional linguistics. To the linguists such as Halliday, language is just a kind of social symbol. It is one of the most important subsystems in the entire symbol system. Communication through language is a kind of activity belonging to human being who is also a member of the entire society (Halliday, 1978).
