8、Basic Structure of Automobile Automobiles are basically the same in structure,although they are quite different in style and design. In other words,any automobile is composed of four sections,such as engine,chassis,body and electrical system.Engine The engine is the power source of an automobile. Th

9、e most common type is the internal combustion engine,which burns fuel within the cylinders and converts the expanding force of the combustion or explosion into rotary force used to propel the vehicle. All engines have fuel, exhaust, cooling, and lubrication systems. Gasoline engines also have igniti

10、on systems. The fuel system plays a vital part in the power-producing process since it supplies the gasoline to the cylinders of engine. The exhaust system is used to conduct the burned gases to the rear of a vehicle and into the air,quiet the exhaust noise, and ,in most cases, reduce the pollutants

11、 in the exhaust. The cooling system removes excessive heat from the engine components. The lubrication system is important in keeping the engine running smoothly. Motor oil is the lubricant used in the system. The ignition system supplies the electric spark needed to ignite the air-fuel mixture in t

12、he cylinders, which initiates the power stroke.Chassis The chassis is a framework used to assemble auto components on it. The chassis includes the power train, suspension, steering, and brake systems. The power train system consists of mechanisms and units which transmit torque from the engine to th

13、e drive wheels and change torque and rpm in magnitude and direction. Among these mechanisms and units are the transmission (gearbox), clutch, propeller shaft,rear axle,differential and the wheels. The primary purpose of the suspension system is to support the weighs of the vehicle. The basic job of

14、the suspension system is to absorb the shocks caused by irregular road surfaces, which would otherwise be transmitted to the vehicle and its occupants, thus helping to keep the vehicle on a controlled and level course,regardless of road conditions. The steering system is used to control the driving

15、direction of the vehicle as it moves. The key components that make up the steering system are the steering wheel ,steering shaft, worm, gear sector, pitman arm, drag link, steering knuckle arm,king pin, steering arms ,tie rod, front axle and steering knuckle. The brake system is a balanced set of me

16、chanical and hydraulic devices used to retard the motion of the vehicle by means of friction. Structurally, an automotive brake system contains several major parts like the brake drum,brake shoe, brake lining, etc. Functionally, an automotive brake system can be divided into service brake mechanism

17、and parking brake mechanism. Body The automobile body provides a protective covering for the engine, passengers and cargo. It is designed to keep the occupants safe and comfortable. The body is generally divided into four sections - the front, the upper or top, the rear and the underbody. These sect

18、ions can further fall into a lot of assemblies and parts, such as the hood, the fenders, the roof panels, the door, the instrument panel, the bumpers and the luggage compartment.Electrical System The electrical system supplies lighting and driving power for the automobile. The electrical system of a

19、 modern automobile is composed of four main circuits and a number of branch circuits. The four main circuits are the generating circuit, starting circuit, the ignition circuit and the lighting circuit. All the main circuits are connected together and linked to the battery which is necessary in elect

20、ric services on any vehicles.2. 27、 generally considered the heart of an automobile. A sound engine should develop full power to maintain the tractive effort and consume fuel and oil within the established limits. The symptoms indicative of some troubles with the engine are the excessive fuel and oil consumption, smoky exhaust, loss

28、of power, and knocking in the engine. Excessive fuel and oil consumption and smoky exhaust(the oil level in the crankcase being normal) are usually attributed to the sticking or wear of the piston sings. Worn valve guides are also a frequent cause of excessive fuel and oil consumption. When oil is b

29、eing consumed by passing through the engine, it usually causes heavy blue smoke to come from the exhaust, particularly after the engine has idled for several minutes. Sticking can be remedied by mixing equal parts of denatured alcohol and kerosene and pouring 20g of the mixture into each cylinder th

30、rough the spark plug hole, leaving it there overnight. In the morning ,start the engine,run it for 10 to 15 minutes, shut down and change the oil. Loss of engine power resulted from the drop of compression which may occur when the cylinder block head nuts are tightened nonuniformly or insufficiently

31、, or the head gasket is damaged; the piston rings are stuck in the grooves owing to carbon or lacquer deposit; the rings are worn, broken or lose their resilience; the cylinders are worn. Noises and knocks in the engine are caused by the following factors: A distinct metallic knocks appear if the pi

32、ston and cylinder are worn and the clearance between them is excessive. The knocks are most vivid when the engine runs cold. An abnormal sound originates from some form of piston-ring problems during engine acceleration,and not frequently from a piston ring striking the ring ridge at the top of the cylinder. A piston-pin knock is noticeable most of the time when an engine is idling, which is
